Can anyone tell me how to use hydrated lime as a stall freshener? I had been using a product named PDZ to remove the ammonia from the stall, but it has become too expensive. The farmers co-op recommended using lime on the stall floor, so I bought a bag but it does not have any directions except that it is caustic. I know that American farmers have used this product for hundreds of years, but HOW is it safely applied to not burn??? Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

This is what I do:

Strip the stall of all bedding & mats.

Remove all feed tubs.

Spread a thin layer of lime on the wet spots. (Do not inhale)

I spread it in the morning and put the horse back in at night, after replacing the mats. It's not good for humans or animals to inhale it, so make sure it has enough time to settle.
