getting horse to eat his medicine...

what can i put in my horses feed to make him eat his medicine? :confused:at the moment he is just turning his nose up and i really need to get it down him!!

Mint is one of the best ways - most horses can't resist it!
You can also try sugarbeet, honey or syrup, a cup or so of fruit juice, carving out a carrot and stuffing the medicine inside it (may take a while though) ...

Somtimes you need to resort to honey and a syringe! Or apple sauce and a syringe.

I know a woman that swears by using applesauce and mixing in the meds.
Another (for bute, anyhow) melted the tablets in a little water, then mixed with sweet feed.
Yet another gives a little molasses mixed in to cover the taste.

When Sal was ill, I used to mix up a large spoonful of black treacle with boiling water and pour it over the feed, then let it cool. It worked a treat, and he loved it... and the mucking out was interesting because his poo all smelt like a victorian sweetshop! :D

Asda's cheap apple sauce! It's about 50p for a pot and well worth the money for it's disguising factor! Mix the meds in the sauce and then mix the sauce into their feed - worth using a considerable amount - maybe half the jar, to really disguise the taste, but it works for me.

Or a quicker way is to make a jam or apple sauce sandwich. Two slices of bread with the jam or sauce smeared onto BOTH slices. Tip the medication on one slice and then slap the other on the top. Gets it down REALLY quickly as they think they are getting a nice treat from mum :p

Another vote for the apple sauce from me too. Works everytime. Tesco value one is very cheap.

marmite sandwiches! My mare gets all her meds and wormers this way - its easy and she thinks its wonderful:D
