Trotting poles should be about 4ft apart and canter poles about 10ft apart :)

Lately ive been doing lots of pole work to relieve the boredom in the arena!

Ive found for my 14.1 hh cob x we put the poles 4ft apart normally but then add an extra 'foot' i.e. my own foot length for asking for an extended trot.

For canter, i dont bother with feet i use two large strides..best bet is to lunge over the poles before you ride then you can see for yourself and your horse can balance themselves better without a rider interfering!

Im still trying to find the best distances for grid work but ive been told that it doesnt have to be perfect distances as this encourages the horse to find its own stride and balance himself out.

For trot I stand with the backs of my heels against the pole and take one large stride, and place the next pole by my toes. Use an odd number of poles (Not two) or horse might jump them.

For canter I stand with the backs of my heels against the pole and take three large strides, and put next pole in fromt of my toe.

This is for a working pace. Adjust for collected or extended.

Agree with this measuring, this is what i used to use too, maybe adjust slightly seeing how we got on and what we wanted to achieve (she was a big gangly lopey thing) :)
