In relation to one of my other posts the other day ...

Unfortunately the farrier couldn't come out today due to the absolutely shocking amount of rain ... to be fair he was only going to squeeze the lame pregnant mare in because of my friend and me and how concerned we were! Anyway he is coming out in a few days to look at her! And finally the owner appears to have noticed that there is something wrong ... however she is not quite there as she is happy to wait for the farrier rather than phoning another or the vet! (but thats another story!)

My question is ...

Does anyone know of any websites etc where I can find information about pregnant mares and drug interactions?

I already know alot about pregnancy and how the foal receives nutrients etc etc

So in theory, if you give the mare a pain killer or antibiotic some of this may reach the foal ... but want I want to know is which drugs are safe and which aren't!?

We had a pregnant mare last year who went lame. Normally we'd give 'em some bute and keep and eye. But you cannot give much to pregnant mares and the vet had a long hard search for something we could use safely.

As the lameness was not serious we just kept an eye and she (like most unspecific lamness) got better by herself.

I think there are a lot of antibiotics that are safe, but we were scratching about for a painkiller. A specialist horse vet might know, ours were scratching about in books!

Could someone please enlighten me as to what the problems are with buting a pregnant mare (she was covered at the end of September)? My YO has a 3yo welsh D who has had a tendon problem flare up, with a touch of thrush as well :( She has given her bute for a couple of days as she had completely forgotten she is in foal... she's now worried sick. Are we talking abnormalities or does it bring on abortion or even death?

Thank you

You know, I didn't ask, the vet just sucked his teeth and read the contra indications!

I know sea weed supplement in pregnancy is not a good idea as it can cause jaw abnormalities.
