Have been offered an elderly Dartmoor X on loan from a horse sanctuary - great, but she has a mild dust allergy (will get 'snotty' on straw and needs her hay to be dampened) and I use straw in the stables/loose housing (have a barn full of straw, as my hubby makes it on the farm). One option is to put her in a separate stable with dust-free bedding, but reluctant to buy bedding when we have so much straw free. Does anyone know of anything that can reduce the tendency to dust allergy - ie, anything to sprinkle on the straw (the stables are well-ventilated and the straw is not at all dusty), good supplements?
Thanks.

My horse gets snotty on straw too but I'm in a similar situation as you - straw is on site. Can you feed haylage instead of hay? I try to sweep up as much dusty bits a possible! I also think NAF does a respiritory range which might be worth checking out.

bedmax, hempcore and most quality shaving bales are dust extracted these days :)
sorry i misread post:rolleyes:
im afraid i dont know about supplements, ive heard of horses wearing a pair of tights over their nose to stop pollen and dust going up there, whilst riding.
is straw really that dusty ? i didnt think it was.
