Hey peeps

Im 5'5 and 10 stone (i dont look over 8 and a half so i reckon its muscle - honest :p )

What sort of pony should I be looking at?

I rode an exmoor last month but he felt like his legs were wobbling not sure if it was me being paranoid or cos he is nearly 30 haha!

What are the strongest breeds and that can live out?

Any help

Depends really if you like horses or ponies. Im about the same weight and height as you and i have a Norwegian fjord, shes very strong and takes all the family out including my uncle a few weeks ago who weighs around the 13 stone mark. So really if you like the smaller size go for something like a fjord or highland, they are very hardy and will live out in all weathers.

Hope this helps!

You could probably get away with most. My 14hh dales mare can cope with me at 14.7 stones and still manages to bugger off out hacking ;) :D

I reckon anything from a Welsh Section C, Highland, NewForest, Connemara, Fell, Dales, Welsh Section D. That is saying you'd like a native :D

at 10 stone you don't need one of the strongest breeds. i would look for something either very wide and 13hh or above, or a more normal width and 14hh or above. they should all live out, although as with any breed there are tough nuts and wet lettuces who like their home comforts. best bet is to find one who already lives out, or has done with no problems.

Your my height and weight and I have a 12hh welsh a, 14hh welsh cob and 14.3 welsh cob x.
I can ride my chunky 12hh without a problem, but for longer rides (10 miles +) I wouldn't be happy on her.
The other 2 have no problems at all carrying me.

Is 10 stone the heaviest you are likely to be? If not then estimate your top ever weight and go on that. It would be awful if you couldn't ride after a contented chrsitmas ;)

Any good example of any UK M&M type would carry you at 10 stone!

Maybe not a 36 inch Shetland , but a 42 inch one would

I'm 10 stone and about 2 inches shorter and I feel best on 13hh-13.2hh section Cs. I do ride bigger and smaller, but this is the height I prefer and they carry me no probs.

well, I'm five foot 4 and at present weight around about the 10 stone mark (sometimes a little under) My boy is a 13.2hh welsh xxxxx (lol!) and he's 26 years young. I ride him five days a week for anything from 40 mins to three + hours. (thats hacking ,schooling and jumping) And he copes just fine. Heaviest I was on him was 11 stone and he coped fine with that too, but I wouldnt want to be there again (for my sake as much as his! lol!) He's not a particularily sturdy pony, but neither is he spindly.. I'll find a photo to illustrate.

ok, not the best phot, from october 07 (I've no recent ones of me on him!)

I'm 10 1/2 stone and my pony is some sort of Connemara Cross, hes 14.3hh and isn't particularly heavy set though he does seem to have some sort of Cob blood in him. My riding school puts me on a little 14 hh riding pony sometimes and she seems well able for me as well.

lol if i did that i'd have to add a whole 3.5 stone!!

A pony is a great way of stopping yourself being too content! ;)

At 10 stone you are a great weight for ponies, as everyone has pointed out! :)

Great to see someone of 10st on a section A.. :D

Hahahahaa! Sheeshhh, I wish I was 10 stone!

I go 220'ish and ride my 14 hander 3 or 4 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour and a half. He never has a problemwith packing me, of course we started slow and easy as we got him into shape. Now he frequently has enough go that he wants to do more than I do.

Heres a pic,

OMG.. i'm in LOVE!!!!! That mane is to die for!!!!

I had to sell her...but when I had my solid 13.3 hand Fjord,,,she was 1100lbs when not over weight, she carried my 170lbs-including saddle, with no problems what so ever.

My very wide, nicely boned and stout 12.3 hand Icelandic can carry me 3 hours without a problem. This is riding through some very steep country.

Now I have seen a lot of narrow Icelandic's her height and I would not even want to ride them...those types don't seem to be able to handle the weight.

So any Stout short horse (aka pony) should do.
Icelandic, Fjords, Haflingers, Highlands, Fells and sooo many more.:D

Having owned Icelandics, Fjords and Haflingers I would give them my vote.

Hmmm . . . dreams of a ridden shetland :rolleyes::D.

10st is just fine for most ponies as long as they aren't too young; i got carted off and launched in the air by a diva mare who is 13.2hh and about 14years old or more; and i was 9 1/2st then (little bit less now) and a few months earlier my 11 1/2st sister had ridden her for an hour and found her too fast :p so she definitely wasn't struggling. Ponies are the way to go; my personal favourites are shetlands, exmoors, highlands, Dales . . . ummm . . . all british natives actually :D. I wouldn't worry at all about your weight for a pony they're stronger than a lot of people give them credit for! Good luck with your search by the way :)

There is no way an exmoor would wobble carrying 10stone! They are exceptionally strong for their size a bit like a shetland in that respect, but it is important that you can ride feeling confident that your pony is comfortable:D

I'm 5ft3 and just under 10 stone, I have a 14.1hh Connemara. He carries me easily and I don't worry that I'm squashing him. He could go all day long :D
