Hi,
Im thinking of changing from shavings to straw to bed my horse on. Shavings have just got so expensive and im wondering how much straw works out at per week.
Id be buying in the large bales of straw so how much are they on average??
How long would one last?? (12x12 stable, would have it semi deep as no rubber matting)

Firstly have you ever had your horse on straw before? If not was he on straw before you owned him? Just be a little bit careful that he hasn't got a reason for being bedded on shavings i.e breathing problems.
In answer to your question, it depends on how dirty your horse is. One of mine is an absolute stinker  and what he cant manage to eat he poops on so he has about a small bale a day sometimes more, but its still cheaper than shavings!!! My other 2 are ok and I use about 6 small bales a week for them both. But bare in mind I am a really fussy mucker outer and I make HUGE beds.
Could't tell you how much of a big bale you would use because that depends on how big they are. Where I come from I found them really poor value for money
