Hello possums

I brought some full size brushing boots today and but I'm not 100% convinced they fit. I can do them up no problem but they don't go completley up the cannon bone to the knee. Is it still okay to use them they don't put pressure on her legs. I thought they would be okay to use but my Yard Owner thinks diffrently.

These are them by the way (but in black):-

I must be a very bad horse owner or something.. but does it make a difference what length they are? Why does the part of the leg directly below the knee need protecting? They'd have to practically cross their legs over to 'brush' those bits wouldn't they?

I'm genuinely confused!

I thought the main purpose of brushers were to protect the fetlock mianly and the part of the leg a few inches above that too. Are they supposed to go right up to the knee? I don't think ANY of mine do! Oops!!

Thats what I thought. I didnt think that the length would matter at all, as those wouldnt really brush. Hmpf... does someone know??

That's actually a good point.. how would they brush the bits between the knee and the fetlock

Mine are more like these..

These are classed as tendon boots.. but do stop brushing to.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think as long as they don't go over or interfere with the movement of the joint they they are fine. i had the same problem with my cob as he has good bone but shortish legs, so to get a boot that I could do up they would be too long. Just got some woof wear double lock boots in medium extra wide that fit well :)

I think defo aslong as they don't restrict joint movement, are comfortable and do the job they should be fine :)

Brushing is the touching together of both fetlock joints. Therefore the "short-ness" of the boot is irrelevant, however if too long then movement could be restricted.

they can protect against more than your usual brusing of fetloks tho. In a fall or spook anything can happen. My last horse got a cut to her back leg when I fell off out on a hack and she bolted - the cut was on the inside of the cannonbone and would have been prevented had she had back brushing boots on. If a horse spooks suddenly they can also catch the inside of that part of the leg with the edge of the shoe from the opposite side.
here is blue in his- i was always told they shouldnt restrict movement of fetlock or knee, i guess the best protection comes from them covering the inside of the fetlock and ight up the cannonbone, but not over the knee.?
