How many of you would do actually buy a horse that was generally shoed, and and move it to barefoot and shoe it barefoot? And how would you do it.

i've never bought a horse with shoes but i know if the horse dosn't need them (ie not sore without them, even, strait legs) then it's ok ot take them off and have their hooves trimmed regularly, best to also apply a hoof conditioner while they adjust to walking bare foot. hooflon spray is REALLY good :)

just realised ** in aus, definatly use a conditioner if you plann to take them off around the dry season or summer when the bround is dry and hard, i use it on my horse during the dry spells cos she'd just have no hoof left other wise :)

My horse was shod when I got her. I first of all took the backs off (yard policy until the 'kick risk' was assessed) and she did well with that so after I'd researched barefoot I finally took the plunge and we haven't looked back :D
I would buy a shod horse again and would hope to take it barefoot with the help of my EP (Equine Podiatrist). The last time it was pretty easy as she'd only be shod for about a year but getting a horse who had been shod for longer wouldn't put me off as I've seen the benefits even though it can be hard work. I would never rule out shoes completely though :)

Well, see Barefoot bit I have no trouble with, 'cause my horse I have currently is barefoot, but I am looking at buying another horse (selling the one I've got) and I wouldn't mind doing some showing, so was wondering whether it was actually proper to go to a show with a barefoot hoof, and how hard it would be to change a horse from shoed to barefoot. As for the conditioning, my horse I have already got Blue, he is fine he is barefoot and I don't use any conditioning stuff, but then again it is ALOT more humid over here then the west coast.
