Goodness luvvie, you are so hard on yourself. Dont worry about what any1 else thinks. If you get the wrong leg when u ask 4 canter bring him back to trot and then ask again making sure give the correct aids.
Lighten up on yourself and him and enjoy yourself. Sounds to me u are trying 2 hard. Good Luck :)

i assume you're talking about canter and not trot diagonals.
make sure you have inside bend, inside leg on girth, outside leg behind, and head slightly turned in

If you ment u are trotting on the wrong diagnal. Its easily remedied after a few trot strides have a peek and check. If your wrong change... I see no shame in this mate!

Dont be silly. Some people are better than others at some things. I have been riding 25 odd years and I still have a quick peek at my diagnal just to be sure. The most important thing is u know which is right and which is wrong and if your wrong u change it. There is probably things that you can do much better than your friend. Dont waste your energy worrying about it. :)

Ahh trot diagonals. Yes you should be able to feel canter leads, but Ive been riding for over 16yrs - had 2 loan ponies, 3 of my own, lessons and lessons and lessons at least once a week throughout that time, classical lessons, ridden HUNDREDS of horses.... and I still cant always feel diagonals. :o And Ive never tried too hard - though my new instructor is teaching me to ride with my seat more so Im having to try harder :p.
Dont be so hard on yourself - just look! There's absolutely nothing wrong with looking, someone's just trying to make you feel bad :p.

There is nothing wrong with having a quick look down the outside shoulder the horses shoulder next to the fence or wall of the school for about 3 strides so that you can have a quick look. So that when the should comes back you sit and when the shoulder goes forward you rise.
If it is canter you mean then ask in one of the corners of the school, bring your outside leg back even more then normal and inside leg on the girth so that you can give a clear signal to the horse which canter lead you want. i.e inside leg to lead.
Hope this helps

my trick is to sit for 3 beats of sitting trot when first going into trot and then start rising, you should then be sitting in the saddle as his outside fore leg is coming back.
its not just me it works with neither, i use it in my lessons for when kids struggle

I dont know how you ride, but from my experience this is what id say.
Make sure your sitting up, putting a tiny little bit more weight into your outside. Make sure your sitting the trot as vikki said, for at least 3 beats. Ask for canter on a corner, its easier. Dont look down as such. Just glance. I used to look down, unseating myself and leaning in. Now i literally move my eyes.
Yould get there, dont worry about what others think! I used to, but all it does is make you panic!

I can actually move my eyeballs without moving my head!
and i always glance at the shoulder too see if im on the correct diagonal

And horses are very clever they can throw you on too the diagonal they prefer, especially when out hacking - in a straight line you dont check diagonals sit for a beat and go onto the other one and feel the difference- you and the horse have automatically chosen the morse comfortable side.

I too, after 15yrs of riding, often get the diagonal wrong and need to check. It also depends what horse your on - some have very strong diagonals and it's obvious - others will push you onto the wrong diagonal. I can usually tell without looking but I don't do it automatically without checking.

Just have a look we all do.
Some horses you can tell without looking but most are hard to tell a less you look just don't make it obvious if you don't want peeps to know you look.

Diagnals! I'm sorted with them, after riding for years I've mastered them, still takes a quick sneaky peek and often a sit for two cos I can't just feel it I need to see it, I've got in to the habit of after a few strides of trot just a quick glance and then take necessary action. Don't feel bad, it is a tricky one and one I think many fab riders need a sneaky peek to know whether its right or wrong.
At the mo I'm struggling with heels down, riding I'm fine but when I'm asking horse for an upwards transistion I'm on my toes, why? I don't know I've never done this before its wierd but this is my next bad habit to break.

asked for trot after he warmed up and i went straight onto the correct leg!
every time i asked for trot or canter i was on the correct leg!

well done it seams like it has all clicked into place for you, sometimes all it takes is for someone to explain it in a different way.
