looking for a cheapish dressage saddle, for my wide, flat backed mare.
would a wintec fit her flat back?

My Wintec VSD didn't fit my flat backed Sec D (which is a shame because I loved it for me) and she ended up with a stiff back because of it.
The front fitted fine but the back didn't and just adding some flocking under the cair panels did not alter it enough to be able to make it fit.
My advice as always is to have a saddle fitter come in and recommend something for you. You then will know what fits, won't be making your horse suffer and be getting the best performance from your horse. It doesn't cost a lot to get a fitter in and is worth it for the welfare of your horse. :)

Oh. How about a thorowgood dressage? Are they any better?

i have one of the old thorowgood griffin cob dressage saddles and i love it. But i'm (supposedly :p) clued up about saddle fitting as i'm studying it just now. If i wasn't as competant then i'd always get a fitter in. Infact i'd advise all horse owners to get in a knowledgeable fitter to fit their saddles. don't just take a chance on a cheap one, it could end up wrecking your horses back.

Ok, i know the basics of fitting a saddle, shes just had a brand new leather saddle fitted too (professionally), so i know the size of the saddle she needs - 17/17.5" XW with a flat tree.

Wintec and 'wide and flat backed' don't go together! They are TB saddles (for the narrow, sloping Tb back) and therefore don't suit the flat backed cobs. You'd be amazed (horrified:eek: ) at the number of 'professional' saddlers who would be willing to fit one to your horse though:(
Have a look at the thorowgood dressage saddles - they have a much better tree type and panel shape. They're also about the same price.
Or you could get the saddler out to fit a dressage saddle then go and have a look for the exact same make and size (each brand is different, inc their widths, so you need to know exactly what you need) somewhere else - ebay often have dressage saddles cheap. It can be a gamble and you need to get the saddle checked over by the saddler again but it can get you a bargin.

Thanks for letting me know.
I quite like the look of the T6, is the suede the only difference between T6 and T4?

Wintec isabell werth is better than most wintecs for flatter backs but they aren't cheap! Thorowgood cob dressage might be better and they do sometimes go quite cheap on ebay.

I dont know about all wintecs. But I can tell you that I had a wintec pro dressage probably wont be any good for you. I have a wide cob and it didn't fit him properly, even though it was fitted by a professional (using the tem loosely). I had lots of problems with it.

My favourite dressage saddle is the versatile Wintec Isabell Dressage - extremely comfortable (i rode for a whole day in it perfectly comfy) and fits nicely too, as well as being beautifully contoured.
You can always try it.
