my horse wont eat feeds without some kind of 'mush' added (sugar beet, fibre beet, soak calm and condition etc)

there is nothing wrong with her teeth, just personal preference i think:rolleyes:

as we are coming into spring what would be the best 'mushy' product to feed her that wont make her gain too much weight. she will be being fed hi-fi light and pony nuts as well (small amount)

the options i have come up with so far are sugar beet, spedi beet, fibre beet, alfa beet, soaked fibre nuts, soaked calm and condition.

anyone know which is least 'fattening' or have any other options??:D

My choice last year was speedibeet as it is unmollased and doesn't require as much soaking in the way of soaking. I haven't needed to add any to Joy's feed yet this year but used it last year :)

Since then I became aware of fibrebeet and got a free sample sent through. Joy loved it and if I needed her to have extra rations then I would go for this over the speedibeet as it is better suited to those not wanting their horses to gain weight. It does need to be soaked for longer though but I would just make this my first job of the day so not really an issue :)

Sugar beet has mollasses added so I wouldn't go for that and fibre beet is like speedibeet but with alfafa included amongst other things.

I don't know anything about fibre nuts or calm and condition :o

I just misread the thread and was about to go into great reams about how my horse WON'T eat mush either and what a PITA it is because I can't get her to gain weight and she won't eat beet pulp etc etc :o

Anyway, now that I've read it right .... beet pulp, soaked and then if you just feed the pulp and drain off most of the water is quite lo-cal. Also, a thing we have here - can you get hold of dehydatrated forage cubes ? They're just hay that you soak.

I have discovered these things because, believe it or not, it is not possible to buy just 'chaff' in this country, so I have nothing to 'feed' to my tubby little Pony. (Which problem is now solved, by the way, since the very expensive juicer my beloved bought me for Christmas, happens to make a fantastic chopper of ordinary hay - it doesn't extract any juice at all, but the by-product is very nice short hay chop :D )

There's a new feed by Allen & Page called Fastfibre - it's basically low calorie mush with no added anything (no sugary stuff at all). It has some unmollassed sugar beet in it as well as added vits and mins. My chap took a few days to let me know how he liked it (basically not too mushy at all, fairly dry), but you can make it as mushy as you (or your horse) likes, right up to the brown slop stage :D

I always the only problem with soaked feeds in warmer weather is they go 'off' so quickly & if youa re not careful you can waste loads. So if using soaked ones only make up what you need for that day otherwise it goes horrid!
Could you try soaking the pony nuts you were going too use for a little while til they go 'mushy'?
Or maybe a few grass nuts?

i soak high fibre cubes and my horse loves it i soak them in warm water in the cold weather. they have nothing in them either to fatten them and or lamintis friendly

i put a scope of spearmint and garlic in with them and they smell so nice :) and a bag lasts ages as they double in size

i'd add water to the feed which will, if left an hour, dampen and soften the pony cubes and add mints/ garlic too.x
