So I've been umming & aahing over whether to start using this for my tb.
He is looking ok at the moment & but is always a struggle to keep him looking a healthy weight.
He is on conditioning mix with sugar beet & grass nuts & pink powder at the moment & is doing well from it. But every now & then I hear rave reports on well blue chip works.
We did have a spell on simple systems stuff but I just couldn't keep the weight on him over winter in work.

Any blue chip reviews welcome !

Hi Gordysgirl

I'll raise my hand to being a Bluechip fan.

My tb was so so SO painfully skinny, ate like a horse though :D but I really needed to give him good food that wouldn't make him fizzy or hot. I was recommended Bluechip. Started it last September to make sure if anything he didn't drop any weight coming into the winter.

Anyway he is now in the best of form and when this bag finishes, i'm taking him off it, I think he's ok now.

I couldn't tell you if he would have got to this stage without it, but really, he has improved umpteen-fold.

Blue Chip products (especially Original) remain top of my favourites list for horse feeds - fantastic quality and features, very effective and worth every penny!

:-D

Yep, another blue chip fan (although I am finding it makes the wee man a bit fizzy - it had the totally opposite effect on Skippy)

i recommend it to everyone !!! my boy has been on it for 4 months and the change is amazing, i find it has calmed my boy down, he is calmer in the stable and is happier around me, his digestive system is working better and he is looking amazing.

i had been using top line conditioning mix for months and didnt get half of the results that i have already had off blue chip and it works out cheaper for me as i was going through top line every two weeks,

if you look of my thread called my boy the stud muffin, there is a picture there that i took the other day. i am trying to get before and after on but cant work photobucket very well.

Fin has been on blue chip original for years, prior to this he had terrible feet and was always losing shoes etc. but the blue chip worked wonders on everything. All he gets everyday his his recommended amount of blue chip with some carrots and hay and for a 19 year old he looks absolutely amazing. Fantastic hooves, fantastic coat, wonderful sparkle to his eye and absolutely no signs of ageing at all. It is certainly something i will be giving to my own horsey whenever i get one even if it is nearly £40 a bag:eek::eek::eek:

Thanks guys it is definatley something to consider. He is looking ok now, but that is with an enormous amount of feed & alot of rugs! Even though blue chip is more expensive it sounds like it is more economical & I bet if I addedup what he is on now it wouldn't be much different.
Samsaria - BIG difference!

Blue chip is brilliant but expensive. It is fine for the single horse owner but on a yard it will prove expensive. A great alternative, which is still pricey but not half as bad, is NAF Pink Powder.

Bluechip is expensive BUT one bag lasts a long time - I get almost two months out of a bag (70euro).

BC is expensive. I've been far more impressed with Equilibria and its much cheaper. TopSpec is really good for weight gain in some horses as well, but doesn't seem to suit every horse.

My horse had an allagiy to egulibria. It made her come up in all these lumps that started weeping. They were all up her legs and belly. So weird. I feed mine blue chip origanal now. It is really good for our yearling.

Ive always fancied trying blue chip I always hovered over the bag in WCF then walked away!!

The pictures above look superb, and I have certainly heard all good things from the stuff.

Maybe I will treat Kai to some as a moving in present!:p

Although people rate blue chip, baileys low cal or top spec actually have more vits and mins and, and higher values too...for less ;)

i have noticed this on reviews... i have seen comparison charts of blue chip and top spec but it was made by top spec... weight for weight it showed top spec had more than bluechip for all but one ingredient meaning it isn't telling you everything that is in blue chip... maybe its this extra ingredient that helps (????)

i've had my mare on it for a while. i'm not convinced its helped to be honest :( She is 30 and did have a terrible summer followed by a not so nice winter (so had no time to really gain weight over summer for winter. i'm on my second bag and she's on the recommended amount for "gaining" weight and i worked out even on the extra amount 1 bag lasts 40 days... and i can buy for £35 :D that alongside readygrass seems to be helping (at last)

Someone independent did a comparison as well, but can't remember the url for it now. TS does have more of a lot of goodies than most other balancers, but having more of everything doesn't always mean something is better. TS really didn't suit one of mine, she got totally ASBO-worthy on it, she's much better on LoCal which has less of a lot of things in. And my cob got way too fat even on half rations of TS.

I'm getting a bit unconvinced about balancers in general at the moment. One horse on the yard was an BC last winter and not this winter, the only difference I can see is that she was a bit more shiny last winter and that could just as easily be down to having more opportunity to be a wallowing bogpony this winter. She's actually keeping weight on better this year. Another one was on Equilibria last year and didn't seem any different after stopping it. Mine are on LoCal but I'm considering not bothering to buy a new bag after current one finishes to see if its really doing anything..

i think a lot depends on the horse (as you say) and the current circumstances. my mare was out 24/7 last year but due to struggling with her weight we've had to being her in at night this year... there isn't enough goodness in the grass right now. i still think grass is the best thing for them, just add in missing bits 'n' pieces if and when needed.

After talking to a baileys rep, they would advise on feeding no4 conditioning cubes to the older horse for weight gain. Cheaper again! :D lol

i'm afraid i have to say....

i didnt like it:o

all the horses i have bought have come from dealers and looked like all the before pics. i was on full livery when i got them so didnt control their feeds and all they ever got was chaff and pony nuts, good grazing and TLC and now they look like your after pics - so could this (in some occasions) not be a contributing factor?

i dont actually find it that expensive considering it lasts 3months (i pay nearly £70 for calmer that lasts the same amount of time). if you look back through my threads you will see i posted that bluechip made my horse fat and i'm not the only one who has experienced this.

it obviously has a great name so i wouldnt not recommend trying it

i have noticed that mac is looking a bit chubby but i think this is down to that fact i havent been able to ride him due to the weather :( blue chip was a last resort for me as after 5 months of trying other things without any joy i thought it was worth a try. he was quite run down when i got him and it has taken a while. other horses in the past i have managed to gain weight with sugerbeet and chaff i think mac is just desting to spend every penny of mam's money :)

i have started to reduce the amount i give him so that it is more of a maintence rather than a build up.

thank you konch - so what vit/mins are the most crucial (in people's opinions) for weight gain?

Thanks guys - I have tried the TS balancer in the past - he lost the plot completley! Like someone said..he deserved an asbo!

Yes i agree with you Palomino Mare - its hard to tell how much of my horses recovery was due to the great feed he gets at our livery yard.

Also, my friends got a fussy mare, she carefully eats her hard feed but avoids the little blue chip nuggets :o- so the taste isn't liked by all horses!

My lad is on blue chip now, I think it's great stuff. Hopefully it'll do the trick for him too although i've never had to use it on a case as severe as his before..
