Here he is with his custom-made Lodge Ropes riding halter. I think he looks good, even in his winter woolies.
The problem with this horse is that standard halters don't fit him properly because he has quite an extreme Arab head, with a tiny nose. So when I ride in my halter the knot swings back and up into his throatlatch, interfering with the aids. A well-fitting halter is the solution - and Rob added his own bling bits to suit the horse in question - Celebrity Psyche. :D
(There may be some other photos later, this is where the battery in my camera ran out, but my friend took some more).

Perdita, it must be 18 months at least since you visited - welcome any time. :)
To get this shot we ruthlessly exploited some small girls riding past on ponies to get his attention. When the other photos come through they are more "animated" because we got him between about 20 walkers and some cyclists... ;) I think he thought he was back at Malvern!

I will I will. A nice summer visit maybe? More photos?:D Then maybe you can come and play with my boys too:)

Looking forward to his animated photos, is funny what we do to get them to look alert. I remember using a kids fishing net with a plastic bag on the end once:o

Hi all,
CF- Even with the winter fluffy bits, he is stunning !

Some forum members may notice the tighter than normal fit around the nose. This halter was custom made to this particular horses measurements as a riding halter. With the first couple of rides or lunges, the fiador knot will tighten down and leave around 2" of free play that will be ample room for this horse.
I wanted to put horse hair tassles at the poll knots but was afraid that UK custom may seize the halter (always a possibilty when importing tack with rawhide or horse hair features) but settled on customs friendly red polyester rope :0)

Thank you for the nice comments on the halter, Sharon & I were pleased to be able to do something special for CF, like so many on New Rider, she has become a good friend, not just a customer.

cheers from a hot & humid land Downunder
Rob

Hi again,
Crystal Fire's initial post mentioned "that standard halters don't fit him properly because he has quite an extreme Arab head, with a tiny nose."

Most halter makers have a formula that works on a ratio based on nose circumference : head length or breed. CF's arab has a beautiful classic arab head shape but standard sizing would always produce a halter that was to large in the noseband (full) or too short in the cheek/gullet straps (cob).

Attached is a pic of the halter sans horse. The length seems excessive when compared to the noseband. This only shows that there may be standard sizes but that has no relevance in the real world of horses. Many would consider CF's horse as having a classic arab head shape, and rightly so, but it does not help when trying to buy rope halters off the shelf. I am starting to sound like an advert, but those that know us know that is not the aim of this post. We have more work than we can handle. Stock sizing was created so that stores can sell off the shelf. If you have a horse that is outside standard sizings, dont worry about it, variation within a breed is normal and in most cases you can always find a piece of tack that is an acceptable compromise.
As always, if anyone needs any info, just email, we are on this forum to exchange experiences and info with other horseman (a generic term that covers men, women, children and thier dogs. cats and ferrets) If in doubt when ordering from a local halter maker, feel free to email for an opinion on what we would look for re sizing for a particular horse. Glad to help out and most halter makers will appreciate a customer that knows what they need from them. You would not believe the number of times we get emails from people who just want a standard sized halter. When questioned, the standard sized halter was for a Shetland pony or a Fresian!!!!!

cheers

You lucly duck :D. Seriously CF and LR, that riding halter is jsut absolutely gorgeous.

You know LR, I have really been meaning to get a halter of you, cause my problem is, I have a very gorgeous horse with no space between his cheek bone and his neck it's all rounded, SO halters ALWAYs (that is rope halters) slip onto his cheek bone and stay there.

Hi Pilgrim
Sorry it took so long to post a reply..
It just goes to show that all horses are individuals. The first rope halters we bought were made by an old local horseman, and we were lucky as he believed in the old ways. A rope halter should be made for the individual horse. Stock sizings are always a compromise, but very convienenant :)

Give us an email anytime, no problems.

cheers
Rob

Ah, better treat yourself then! :D
Look up Padron's Psyche, Magnum Psyche and other relatives on the Net - you'll soon be hooked! (Padron is his dad, Magnum is his half brother).
He doesn't look like that photo at the moment - he looks like a drowned rat - but then so do we all in the storm-swept UK!
