View Full Version : Trot, Canter and even going over a small jump!

Just can't quite believe it - I set out to have lessons to figure out how to trot properly, nothing more, nothing less....I never anticipated that I'd be cantering and going over a jump (albeit a small one!).
I've got over my battered and bruised problem and am just chuffed to bits that I have managed to do more than I set out to!
I'm going out for a hack next time for an hour with my RI and am leaving my little girl to have a private lesson as the RI thinks she's needing 1:1 - today was the second time she's fallen off, bless her, she just gets straight back on and carries on as if nothing has happened.
Am giving serious consideration to getting my own horse (have always wanted one, just never really had the guts to do it). I know absolutely nothing about keeping/looking after a horse so am going to talk to the RS to see if I can help out here and there, but can anyone suggest any good books I could read up on?
Picture below taken of me today (far from a pro. but not bad for an old beginner!!) :D

Glad to hear about your lesson success. I just noticed you're from Hilton. I used to live in Balintore when I first got married, then we lived in Tain for 6 years or so, now we're up in Thurso. Where do you get lessons? The nearest RS I can think of is Fortrose or Brora. Brora is where my mum goes. We used to ride at a place outside Bonar Bridge too. Sorry for the rambling! I'm surprised to find someone on this forum who lives near my old hometown!! :D :o

Hey Belle Rider - I'm originally from Fearn - did you go to Tain Academy?? If so, you probably know my father in law - Terry Kirk (aka "The Beek")??
I go to Fortrose for lessons - my RI is Douglas, fab bloke, dead enthusiastic (sometimes a bit too enthusiastic!!) - have only been going there for the last 6 months. I used to regularly go for hacks at Kate's in Tain??
I did notice you were in Thurso - my best friend lives in Wick!
Small world finding someone so close to home!

Yeah I did go to Tain Academy and still have some bad memories of Mr Kirk. Poor you - imagine being his daughter-in-law!!!!
Ah - you go to Fortrose. Have to say I've been twice when my daughter first started riding and they were super. She just went for a hack with several others but they seemed very professional and pretty reasonably priced too. ;)
I think I know who Kate is in Tain too, though I've never actually met her - just heard of her. A friend of mine set up 'Northwilds' on the fendom back in 1994(?) which was a riding school and she was the one who first taught me to ride. She also used to work at a riding school in Embo before setting up her own business and I went with her once or twice and had my first ever gallop on Embo beach!!! :D A memory I'll never forget. ;)

Where do you live now SB1?
Just outside Edinburgh....I left once I'd finished school. We went up North every school holiday for as long as I can remember and finally moved up there in 1991. Short stint at school and then I came back down to Edinburgh!!!
Just back from a trip North, I like to take my little boy up every 2 months or so to see his great grandparents...costing a fortune in diesel! Next one due in 7 weeks so no competitions planned at the moment so saving $$$ that way!! :D
