Hi All,

Since my girly's severe tying up episode, my vet has advised I change her feed...she needs feed for energy as she lacks sparkle and cannot cope on no hard feed...but she is a good doer so puts on weight really easily!..so, rang Baileys and Dodson & Horrell...

First Baileys: Advised Lo cal @ 3 mugs per day and Outshine @ 1 mug per day
Lo cal to provide vits & mins without the calories and outshine to provide the stamina she needs...also both are suitable for those prone to tying up. Sounds great but will cost me about £40-45 a month for feed alone!!! But, if its worth it.......

Dodson & Horrell suggested Equine Sensitive as its ideal for those prone to tying up and suitable for up to medium work. Said I would ideally feed 1.4kg a day but could bring it down to 500g + a vit & min supplement if she put on too much weight at recommended levels. Think equine sensitive is around £10 a bag + say £14 for the supplement....so definitely cheaper and will probably last longer as 500g isn't very much.

Anyway, can't decide which to use...don't really know how to choose between then...so thought I'd ask if anyone has used any of these feeds??

Any advice/recommendations would be gratefully received!

I just started feeding Outshine (less than a week), I've always said it's an expensive way of feeding oil but I won some Bailey's vouchers and Forrest is lacking condition so thought I'd give it a try.

Have you tried Saracens, I'm sure they do something that could help, is it Re-leve?

hi
I do use outshine and baileys plus chaff. outshine is basically oil plus a few bits and peices and is a convenient way of feeding but you could just feed oil which would be cheaper.
Tying up is common in endurance and the suggested diet is forage (or forage substitutes eg chaff) and oil.
Alfa A oil is good and cheap and the alfa a might give her some sparkle.
Whatanijit (whose name I cant spell) is an expert as her horse had this kind of problem, might be worth pm ing her

Thanks for replies...unfortunately can't give my mare alfalfa in any form....to be avoided completely!

We can't get saracens where I am...no one stocks it...

I have fed oil before and not found that it makes any difference to stamina - don't like feeding too much 'straight' oil because of the extra Vit E needed. Apparently the outshine will really help with her stamina, as well as doing good things for her coat?? I do like the fact that the outshine has anti-oxidants, super fibres and prebiotics in it too....

I've been dealing with this particular episode for about 6 weeks now and was expecting to have to change, however, her levels have got alot better quite quickly so looks like she may be in work a bit quicker than expected...so suddenly trying to get it sorted!! I know...I should have sorted it out before...lazy mare!!
