As I said in my intro thread, I have volunteered at my RS to try and get fitter/lose weight, and spend more time around horses again.
In the last 2 days I have spent about 7 hours there!
Yesterday I groomed and tacked up 9 muddy ponies and a couple of horses, which was fun, and nice that the owner trusted me to do it as it has been a long time! I did ask her to check what I'd done afterwards and no rollocking today so must have just about blagged it!
The only thing that was a bit "ooh" was picking out hooves. I know what my pony was like and I was trying hard not to transfer my feelings of trepidation them. Only one tried to bite my bum while I did it lol.
Today, I have mucked out about a dozen stables and then had my half hour private lesson at the end...not the best thought out plan hehe.I stink of s*** and have a few aches and pains but have thoroughly enjoyed it. I only wish I could spend more time there. Still, going back to work tomorrow will at least give me time to recover!
The owner has offered to give me free rides in exchange for my efforts which is nice as I did say that I didn't want anything in return. We have agreed that I will still pay for my lessons but on other days if there is time, we can go out for a hack or something so I will technically get extra time in the saddle rather than "free" time iyswim.
I really am buzzing. Why did I leave it so long to get back into it??

I've done exactly the same thing - spent 2+1/2 hours down at the stables this morning (was a bit late cos somehow the alarm clock didn't work:):)), where i emptied the barrow full of s*** ( punishment for being late!) and then walked a couple of horses around to the exercise yard, bagged up 20 hay nets with fresh hay (hay now in ears, eyes, nose etc...) , learnt how to rug up a horse and over a coffee answered 20 questions about me (i am very new still!). Needless to say, am foregoing the gym tonight!

Looking forward to my lesson tomorrow - hope my legs work!

Definatly advise anyone getting back in the saddle to do the same thing!

I love yard work, any sort, rugging, picking poo, feet picking, tack cleaning, even sweeping up! Good house keeping is vital for a healthy yard especially in the summer months, all those flies (eek).

Glad you are enjoying yourself....you will ache tomorrow!

Glad you're enjoying it too Maxine!
It's nice to muck in and feel involved in some way rather than just turn up and ride. I do ache a bit now though. I went swimming this morning aswell, and that combined with the mucking out and the quite intensive riding lesson I had may make getting out of bed in the morning tomorrow a challenge.
Still, no pain no gain eh? :D

Me too, I always enjoyed the housekeeping side of things when I had my own horses. To be honest, the only thing I didn't enjoy was Ragwort pulling, what crappy back-breaking work that was. Oh, that and trying to sweep the yard on a windy day

Keep at it - you'll get fit and the weight will start dropping off without you even noticing! Horses are fab to be around at any age, whether your a child or fully fledged grown up :p

Yeah, I am really enjoying just being back in the stable environment and having little chats with them over the stable doors as I potter about. Trouble is I'm wanting to go there instead of do other things I should really be doing..all of a sudden there's not enough hours in the day!

Looking forward to weight dropping off too! It was sooo windy today i stayed in the tack room cleaning bridles. Oh and i must look like such a muppet pushing wheelbarrows up the muckheap and getting covered in it's contents!!

Well done to everyone who's discovered the joy of RS work!
