These x-rays are of her right front hoof from the side and from behind. Posted for comments and also if anyone wants to try and guess what "school" my trimmer is... ;) (ps if you know, don't say!)

Me too - was thrilled when the vet said, "Come see the x-rays" then loaded them up on a computer, then even better, burned me a copy on CD!!! :D Technology rocks! :D

wow, i'd only ever seen the hoof xrays dyl had to diagnose his ringbone/pyramidal disease and they are such poor quality in comparison to those!

They are superb quality - you can see the laminae and everything :D Absolutely fascinating :D

Our referral vets have gone digital now as well. Could see a big difference between the 'old style' ones and the new as you can tweak them to get better views.
Oi! - Where's my ligament map? :D

Oops, sorry forgot! Here go for - the vet reckons she's stretched/damaged/whatever the ligaments I've drawn on (badly!)
My favourite thing about the new computerised x-ray system is that you can invert the x-rays to be able to print them without wasting too much ink :D

Collateral Sesamoidal or sesamoidal ligament sound right?
Tavia did the one that runs under the navicular bone - right where it runs over the navicular bone! It was the CS that they chopped to take the pressure off.

Fascinating :) Apart from whatever's going on with her they look like nice healthy feet to me, a parallel toe wall and decent sole thickness. How did the vet diagnose ligament damage from the x rays though?
As to the school of trimming, I don't know how it's possible to determine that from x rays :D External photos would tell more on that one:)

Sesamoidal sounds about right! :) He bandied about a couple of big words and drew various lines etc on the x-rays to show where things were.
Has Tavia fully recovered? The vet was pretty pessimistic and said they're never as good after they've damaged a ligament as they were before...
The vet diagnosed ligament damage as he says the problem is definitely in the hoof but not related to bones as he says they all look perfect, and he said it's definitely not poor trimming (he's going to use these x-rays as a teaching tool for what hooves should look like :D) so the only thing left is damaged ligaments.
This is an old photo (at least 1 year old) of her right front foot...sadly don't have any more recent ones :(

Where we go from here: lots of rest...6 weeks complete rest, 6 weeks being walked out in hand daily, 6 weeks riding out in walk daily and re-evaluate from there. I'm going to take as long as she needs to heal and pretty much give her the year off with just light hacking and ride and leads to keep her from turning into a barrel of flab but I'm not going to push her or jump her until next year. Which means Dylan's coming into work...
I'm also boxing her to Montana's yard later this month to be chiro'd by Dr Dave Siemens which should help make her comfortable as well :)

Well, at least you know. You probably feel better than just plowing along hoping things are going okay.
Good luck with Dylan :)

Thanks :D I am VERY glad I pushed for the x-rays and didn't just keep working her like they originally said to do!

Hehe thanks for inviting us! :D Well, typically she'll come into season cause she'll be somewhere new :o so Monty and Star will probably horrified at her tartyness and I'll be freaking out about her hurting herself...

Vet was quite pessimistic about T's, because of the one she had damaged. He managed to get a reasonable view on ultrasound - enough to see the damage in the ligament and that it wasn't healing after 5 weeks field rest. The opinion was therefore that rest was not going to fix it and the op would give her the best chance of coming sound. It was all or nothing - if it worked she was fixed, if it didn't she would be no better, at which point she would have been off for a 2 year dose of Dr Green and maternity leave.
Her injury was more typical of one seen in jumpers (she did it in the field leaping off a bank at full gallop, over-reached the other forefoot and threw all of her weight on to the leg she injured  ) she is banned from jumping again but as the op worked they see no reason that she will go lame again on it.
Shock Wave therapy doesn't work well in the foot area, so was not an option for her.

Crazy T!! Have no idea how Dolly did hers and can only assume it dates back to the Swan Incident. I'm glad Tavia's sound again! :)

How did the vet diagnose ligament damage from the x rays though?
Not quite the same but the ligaments I tore in my ankle were diagnosed by x-ray too. Along with an old break I didn't know about
I'd have to say trimmer was EP... although I'm thinking that's too obvious?
Fabulous feet!

lol Chev - how can you break your ankle and not know about it? Although saying that a friend of mine broke her arm in three places and the hospital only fixed one break and it wasn't until she broke her arm again skiing that the old breaks were found!
Hehe my "trimmer" is a fabulous farrier who mainly shoes :D He's a super guy, really lovely, great with the ponies, does a lovely job (and now I have indisputable proof ;) ) and is very rarely late :D He's awesome :D And he reckons my ponies are better off unshod until the day I ride them on tarmac for 10 hours a day :D

I've no idea! I remember spraining (or at least I thought it was sprained  ) it years ago and hobbling round on it for a while but other than that I had no clue.
I suspected you were going to say farrier! Hang onto him... he sounds like a really good one :D
