View Full Version : Survived my 6th Hunt

Yesterday was the end of our hunt's season. We probably have about 15 dates, but it was getting expensive for me, since I have to rent a horse and trailer, as well as pay the capping fee -- so I chose to do six.

Anyway, I started out a little rocky yesterday as I had been out in about 6 weeks. But, I settled.

It is already getting too warm here but I imagine the weather is still cool in the U.K. At the end of the hunt I led my horse into a pond for a drink and he sat down and then rolled on his side before I could stop him! That's a first for me!

any pics ? I love to see the different hunt country people have access to. Did you see on COTH the other day there were pics from Battle Mountain, Nev. That was cool - so different from here in the South East.

Hi Kate,

I'll take a look at those Chronicles of the Horse photos.

I don't have any photos from yesterday, yet, but here are some from an earlier one this year.

It's starting to draw to a close the season now over here. The weathers been really good for being out though just recently although a little windier than you want sometimes :) It's still pretty crisp here in the UK. I think the last meet is with the bloodhounds, that's early April, they go on longer than the hunts.

Well done on your 6th hunt!
fab photo's too.
I lived in VA in 99-00 for the hunt season - hunted mainly with Blue Ridge and loved every minute - would love to go back and show OH where i was etc. - preferably in the hunt season so i can show him what it is like out there.
boy do a miss the goose-neck trailers - far better than our little 2 horse things and i found them easier to handle! but i suppose quite impractical over here - imagine them on our tiny roads!
and i miss orios (although i buy them here they are not the same as eating them in US i'm sure!) (that goes for ben and jerry's too!)
now we have the long wait till next season... :(
I would def recommend anyone who interested in hunting to take a trip over for a day or two just to experience it in a different county - however - if it's early/late season try cranberry and vodka in the hip flask (pref prepared the night before and kept in the fridge to chill) rather than sloe gin or whisky - too dam hot for warming drinks! :)
xx
ps - they hunt foxes over there...

All right, let's not get into hunt bashing.

I originally thought this was a drag hunt, but that is just at the start of each hunt until the hounds pick up an actual live scent. This could be fox, deer, or coyote -- usually the latter. Due to the wooded nature of the hunt areas, the hounds quickly disappear from view and we've never yet caught sight of anything -- much less killed it. I don't think they would kill the game if they DID catch it, tho.

To be honest, we're sort of a failure as a hunt. These are pretty much just high-speed hacks with pauses between runs.

Are they like our foxes? I thought there where only Coyotes over there.

The ranch I stayed on in Montana had a real problem with coyotes taking the kittens:mad:

Why post on a thread titled "Hunting" if you don't agree with it....give the girl a wooden spoon someone before her arm gets tired.

they were normal looking foxes in virginia...
ditto to wanabe's message though - they just ran them to ground - did not intentionally kill (i say intentionally as i did see one killed in the season)
it was only foxes where i was - obviously it changes through states/areas/habitates though...
wanabe - you'll be more qualified than me to teach us about that though - i'v only experienced one area!

We hunt foxse in TN too - sorry ! In the last 13 years of the hunt they've caught 4, of whom all but one were sick.

My favorite rider/horse in that group is the tiny girl on the paint pony....For all I know, it might be you, but I don't care, they're cute! ;)
Going on a hunt sounds like fun, maybe I'll have to add that to my "to do" list! All the things available to do with a horse and so little time!

The thing that attracts me to hunting is getting to ride over land that is otherwise closed, and the country in those pics looks gorgous!!

"Not get into hunt bashing"!!! How about not rubbing this disgusting practice in the faces of people are brought to tears just knowing this still happens in some places!

To be fair though this is why people do put hunting in the title so that people who do not agree with it/are offended by it are pre-warned. It is not being rubbed in people's faces. It's freedom of choice, people are allowed to chose which practice/debate side they follow.
There are many things on this board that are offensive to people, this is the way life/humanity goes but everyone should be entitled to talk about their own practices and what they agree with. Why should it be one-sided about some things and not about others?
A lot of people disagree strongly with draw reins but that does not mean that people should not be allowed to share their opinions. A lot of people do not agree with rolkur but people should be allowed their opinions at the least on a "discussion board". I think if you're going to start down the track of topics being frowned upon and not to be discussed it's a slippy grey area.

oh, now that's enough. The thread title gives a basic idea what the subject is, WHY would you even read any further if you're a person that is "brought to tears just knowing this still happens in some places"??? You would do better to simply start your own thread posting whatever you've found that's so terrible instead of raising trouble on this one.
I, for one, am not a PC type person. I don't agree with everything going on, but by reading and asking questions, I'm at least INFORMED. Please allow those of us who are ignorant to read and learn.

Of course you are entitled to your own opinions - EVERYONE feels strongly about something! The point is though that, like you, everyone is entitled to make their own decisions in life. I don't think that wanabe was trying in any way to be antagonistic, she was just sharing her experience and probably had no intention of starting a public debate!

Thank you kackabella. Actually people here don't have the right to post anything they want anywhere they want. That's up to the moderators. It seems to me that some of these anti-hunting posts come close to harrassment and perhaps violate the TOU.

BTW, kackabella, I'm a 59 YO male. :)

Here we go!!

Nice pics the country looks lovely!!

I used to enjoy a good hunt!! even when we never found nothing more interesting that a rabbit :p

Prefer rideouts and common ridings which are kindof like hunts with no jumps or dogs!!!

Would love to do a drag hunt but I will see how Mr Kia feels about it first!
