Was recommended feeding blue chip original and have been looking on the website and it the results look very impressive but is it as good as they say? Is it worth the high price tag?

The website also said that my girly should be fed 500g a day but how much does a sack weigh so I can figure out how long it should last?

Any help please!!

A sack of blue chip is 20kg so would last you 40 days or you can get 10kg Tubs.

I use Topspec Feedbalancer and I have to say I am very impressed with the results. It is cheaper than Blue Chip but must be very good as my horse is a bight bay which is not the easiest colour to dapple but he is always absolutely covered in dapples and he never was before. His coat looks so much brighter and lighter and his feet have also improved so I am convinced he is shining on the inside too :p

I did try him on Blue Chip last year and I am not sure if it was just the time of year but my horse went loopy on it! I had to take him off it and he calmed back down pretty much straight away . I am sure it isnt normally heating but my horse is quite sensitive and finds a lot of non heating foods rocket fuel! :)

As to the muscle tone etc - I think with anything the right exercise is critical but as protein is a muscle building block then if you are doing the right excerises it should be easier to build and maintain muscle. (bear in mind I am into human training and this is how a humans body would work - I am guessing it must be the same for horses). My horse has deff improved in muscle tone but I also started schooling him last October so it is most likely a combination of the two.

I was worried as well, when my boy came on loan his onwer insisted on it. i only feed a cup a day and he looks great on it. a sack has lasted six weeks and i'm only half way through it.

I can see why an owner would insist (annoying though it may seem) because its one of those things where you think how much difference can it make but it really does. I wouldn't feed my horse on anything else now & price wise I think it is very reasonable as you dont have to feed as much or any vit/mineral supplements.

Topspec also do a senior now with Glucosamine in so for anyone feeding a Joint supplement it works out much cheaper

ETA - Sorry I know you are asking about Bluechip and I am using Topspec but they are very simular

I also rate TopSpec over Bluechip.. Had the same issues as AtillaTheFun.. TheG went dotty on BC and when I took him off it (after 4 days!) he reverted to normal levels of madness.. I sold the rest of the bag to a friend who used it on her Cobxtb fine ..

A bag of TopSpec (fed at roughly the same level - 500mls - i.e a Mug) lasted me about 7/8 weeks..

They don't need a lot..

Thanks ever so much - think I''ll try the topspec in that case. My girl is quite easily excited so that's good to know!

Thanks again xxx

sorry just to butt in but do you need to feed anything else with Blue chip or top spec or is 500g of it a day all the horse needs hard feed wise?? At the mo my mare gets 4kgs of spillers coolmix, oil, and suppliments a day (split into 2 feeds obviously) so by the soulds of it Bluechip could drastically cut my feed bills!! :D

Hi Flopsypop (what an interesting name!!)

There's another thread on Blue Chip here:
http://www.newrider.com/forum/showthread.php?t=136776

I am a fan. It was the one conditioner-type feed i was told wouldn't make my horse any hotter - and thankfully it didn't. Myself and a few others with tb's use it on our yard.

I am a fan, not seen it heat anything up as of yet either. :)

It is extremely unlikely to hot up horses as it is:

a) fed in such tiny volumes, and
b) that means it is low in energy

I love Blue Chip personally, - it has great results, is highly platable and doesn't break the bank either (even though each bag is seemingly expensive initially, as it is fed in tiny amounts you could well save money compared to a compound mix or cube).

I used Blue Chip for about a year, and I seem to be in the minority here, but I can't say that I really noticed any difference in my horse. :o

Fin has been on blue chip for about 5 or so years, he was initally put on it because his hooves were bad and it improved them but as soon as he was taken back of it they crumbled again so he is on it permanently now. He is in fantastic condition for a 19 yr old and doesn't have any other hard feed with it, just some carrots and hay and grass.

Im a fan of Blue Chip, my horse was in very poor condition after a persistent virus last winter had lost loads of weight and all muscle. And hes the sort that does the minimum and that mostly on his forehand so not helping you build him up!

A mix of regular work, Pessoa, Visorbin iron tonic and Blue Chip and pink powder has meant that this year he looks just like new - he's already got dapples in his bay coat. The blue chip is also great for thick glossy mane and tail Ive found, and doesnt make the coat scurfy like feeding oil does with him.

Worth every penny !:)

Hmmm I actually thought it was more expensive than that! About 86p a day Thats not bad really considering how long it lasts for

Why does Top Spec sometimes make horses all ASBO and Blue Chip is said not to? Does anyone know what is in BC?

Worried now!!!! Just posted re how to get my new loan back up from winter/skinny condition. Both TS and BC have given some horses ASBOS-what else is there or should I just try a little of both? What are Pessoa and pink powder?

Pessoa (named after the showjumper who invented it) is a training aid and is the 'cats cradle' of ropes and pulleys which you use on the lunge to make horsie use their back end - as soon as they do that and drop their head the thing loosens and rewards them. It attaches to a roller and a headcollar. there are some threads on it with pics I think if you search.

Pink powder is fab and cheapish - it's a pre and pro biotic supplement for their tums which helps them make best use of all the other stuff you feed them and keep their tummies working as they should. It's made by NAF. If you buy it online it isnt expensive and a big tub lasts for months.

hope this helps :-))) good luck with the feeding!:)

Thanks, gonna need it! He's very neglected and skinny but utterly gorgeous and worth the work/wait. Got a solarium in new yard so pampering will be huge!!!!!
