I don't want anything said to me apart from answering the question I am going to post. Had a really blergh day, and don't want to be judged on what I am about to ask.

Sorry for the harshness.

Red hasn't had any vaccinations or tetanus for the past few years, on the basis that him and the other horses never went to shows etc and never went out. However, I'm showing this season and doing it seriously, and want to get Red fully uptodate with his vaccinations/booster jabs/tetanus jabs, etc.

What jabs will he have to have? How many visits, and is it on a routine sort of thing? Like building it up...?

How much for the call-out charge and the jab itself?

Thanks :)
x

ETA - To mods: Sorry, didn't realise what I was doing, does this need to be moved to another forum?

Tetnus and flu.
You have one, then the next one 4-6 weeks later, one 6 months later then once every year after that.
Cant remember the price though.

So is the tetanus and flu jabs two separate jabs? And will I be able to get them both done together at the same time?

Tetnus if nothing else I think they are roughly about £20ish

As M&P said, it's one jab, then one 4-6 weeks later and then one at six months. I've just started a course for my pony...

It cost £36 for callout and £27 for a flu and tet jab :) My pony got Prequenza which is a combined jab, so only one needle.

Curlys yearly jab is around £50.

Hi chicken :)

They have their initial flu&tet

Call out for me is £27 and then vaccination on top of that is £22 (ish).

If vaccinations have lapsed (as Reds have) then he will need another one about 6 weeks after the initial one. Same prices as above.

He will then need a further one 6 months down the line to keep everything up to date.

After that then he only needs it every 12 months :)

A lot of horses have their vaccinations lapsed, don't worry about it :p

Okay, thanks everybody. :D Shall ring the vets up and have a word tomorrow. I want to get his pelvis checked over anyway so will have it all done in one go. :)

if you can take your horse to the vets {if in hacking distance} gives them the exercise and saves you a fortune

Colman started his tetanus course last week, vaccine was £11.20 and my call out was £35 but i split that with another girl on yard having her jabs. He has another one in 6-8 weeks and then in 6 months like someone has already said then yearly.

Mine had their boosters in January. Our vet charges £40.00 call out plus the jabs which cost £29.00 though I can't remember if this is a dual booster. I think she said that the flu is annual booster and the tet is bi-annual (or amybe the other way round, I can't remember.) so I expect that next years should be cheaper as only the single booster instead of the Prequenza.

Some of ours have not had a course yet but if they injure themselves they get a booster jab which covers them for tetanus for 4-6 weeks. I will be starting their courses later this year as we have to build up the funds again after our winter hay purchase and several £200.00 vet bills one after another.

If you are doing just tetnus, my vets did first jabs, then second ones a month later, then the boosters are due in 2 years. The different vaccines differ slightly in that some are yearly boosters, and some are 2 year boosters.

No idea on flu jabs, don't do mine anymore for personal reasons, not sure if they have to be up to date with jabs to attend shows as I'm not into showing

Its 'flu' you need for most shows, have to have a booster within 12 months to be within the rules for a lot of shows. Tetanus you should have whether showing or not because its caught from soil etc not from other horses, but you don't have to have up to date tetanus for showing so it doesn't have to be done every 12 months, some only do it every 2-3 years after the original course. You can get flu and tet in one combined injection, its the first one then the second 4-6 weeks later and another in 6 months then just boosters.

I think its after the second one that they're considered ok to go out showing but i'm not 100% sure and you might need the 6 month one.

I paid about £25 for call-out and about another £25 for the flu + tet vaccination. Tet only is only about £10 plus call-out.

Initial course is two doses of the combined flu & tet 4 - 6 weeks apart. Then a flu booster at 6 months, followed by flu & tetanus 12 months after that.

Once the above is done they need 12 monthly booster for the flu, and on alternate years they require the tetanus booster as well.

The only variation required on the above is for racehorses and horses competing at FEI events where they have to be vaccinated for flu every 6 months.

I also do mine 6 monthly for EHV-1,4 once they are competing (except for T as she has a severe reaction to the EHV). I also use it for broodies when they have to be vaccinated at 5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy (EHV is the commonest cause of late abortion in mares)
