Flaire Bear is absolutely riddled in lice, I mean riddled to the fact you can see them jumping out of her coat(we have had some issues catching her & havent been able to in the past week) They wasnt there previously but she did have it last year about this time.
She had her second dose of spot on(the dog version) on Saturday & Im using the lice powder(the one in the white tube with green writing) but they are not shifting.
YO has had to put her into an isolation paddock as its that bad, can anyone advise on what I can do??
All the other horse's on the yard are being treated today & her brushes & rugs have been done(although Im going to chuck her grooming kit & buy a new one!)
Me & OH was thinking of just clipping the coat completely as thats what the others on the yard are saying??
Poor pony is so miserable bless her itching & rolling frantically to get them off :(

Twinkle has got over her lice problem!I ended up with pour on liquid from the vets, apperently its not registered for use with horses but thats the only thing that has shifted them,it works the same as spot on for dogs,it initially kills the adult lice them once the eggs have hatched it kills them, its worked for Twink so maybe worth a shot?

Not tried Deosect, where can I get that from??

I tried the Coopers stuff last year when she got them, she wasnt as badly infested last year & it didnt shift them then, so not sure I would want to try it again(I think its £30 for the little bottle isnt it??)

its the big bottle and its the "plus" coopers fly spray,if you apply it properly (sponge on amount appropriate for size/weight of horse) it kills them as you are putting it on,cost me £20 from the vet, worth every penny,it killed them on all the horses.

human lice stuff works well, just dont tell them your bying it for a horse! if you do they wont sell it to you.
wash everything on a hot wash, head collars ropes girths the lot.
you can still get the lice shampoo awell (human) may be worth washing the mane and top of neck in it.

deosect is from a vet or at an sgricultural supplier (normally cheaper). Its intended for lice and mites on horses, but its what I use on my chickens, and it works extremely well.

I use dermoline insecticidal shampoo - you can see the dead lice come to the surface of the coat - muhaha!!
you're supposed to repeat it after 14 days - i didn't this time round as it was so cold and so there's been a few come back - i've used hydrophane lice repellant powder to see them off.
i think he got them again this year thanks to his rugs, although they were cleaned professionally i don't think it killed off all the eggs - grrr!
good luck, they are truly vile.

Deosect is excellent - I tried Coopers and powder but they didn't touch fat cobs hidden lice in his feathers. Deosect did the job intantly - and made them silky too! I bought it in Scats, it is expensive for a fairly small bottle but you dilute it lots

We had the vet out for this on Friday - having tried everything else.
He used a pour on cattle product - said was fine for horses. Also recommended battles Lice powder as being the best powder.

As above - Ridect it is a cattle pour on - 10ml per kilo you put half the amount down the spine then two quarter measures along rib cage. My vet told me to use it and I keep abottle on stock permanently. It works within about 24 hrs. You can get it from agricultural shops such as CWG. The normal louse powders etc do not work, especially on a high amount as it doesnt kill the eggs, Ridect does as it works like a frontline flea for dogs and works through the skin. The horse needs to stay dry for 24 hrs if possible. If they appear again they sometimes need a second dose 4 weeks later, although i have never had that happen.
It is expensive but does work and lasts for a long time!!!

A pour-on treatment containing permethrin is what you want and that will be what the vet used in the cattle stuff.
It won't be licenced for horses as in rare cases there have been reactions resulting in inflamation of the skin at site of application.
However it is widely used by vets and horsepersons and does the job.
Be sure to check that there are no live lice after three days..........if there are you should give another dose ten days after first at half rate.
'Spot-on' (for cattle and sheep) is what I use. According to vets I speak to it is safe for in-foal mares too.

Gambit has been scratching on and off for most of the winter - and put it down to his age/losing heavy coat (I comb him out every day and literally get huge piles off every time!). However, 2 days ago I noticed some brown/red flecks in his coat and then realised they are moving  Never actually seen lice before (although used to have to treat a donkey I was fostering regularly with powder). He isn't scratching half as much now typically - but will go to our local farmers' co-op tomorrow and get some 'stuff'. Will treat the other 2 as well, as Frayne is always grooming him (they share a stable at night) and she has some patches going bald (although no sign of lice on her). His rugs are literally plastered with hair on the inside. I will get the hair off and send them off to be cleaned - but is it best to get some powder on them first?

Hubby had some Deosect in his medicine 'shed' (we have a large dairy/beef farm, so he is like a branch of our vets :D) and put that on all 3 ponies yesterday (Frayne hated having it squirted on her poll/withers/back - and ran around the stable at 100mph  - the other 2 didn't even notice). There are lots of dead lice on Gambit this morning and Frayne keeps shaking her head (although I still can't see any on her - but she has a dark coat), so obviously it is having a big effect on the little blighters. I did plaster them and rugs with lice powder, but apart from making them and the stable smell nice it had no effect. Going to keep them out in the field as much as possible now (only bringing them in at night if it is wet), as it must be better than being in their old stables where they have lots of areas to rub on. Taking flea comb and hair remover over to yard now - comb to get dead lice off Gambit and hair remover to get all the hair off the inside of his padded rugs. When we have a mild day I will get some shampoo just to wash out manes to freshen them up and get rid of scurf. It never rains ...... Any idea where they get the lice from in the first place? Never had this problem before.
