Today I was sweeping the poo out of Mrs P's stable when I came across this charming specimen (it's about 6 inches long)

She was wormed on Saturday - all the horses in her field are on a worming programme - so I presume that this is what's killed it, but I'm a wee bit alarmed that such a big thing managed to develop inside her despite the regular worming. Is this a sign that perhaps it's not effective for her? I confess to being a complete numpty on the subject of worms, all I know is that it ain't no tapeworm :o Anyone know what it is? Roundworm?
I'm going to get a worm count done, but does anyone else have any thoughts or advice? Thanks!

Its a roundworm, parascaris equorum, usually only found in foals, unwormed youngsters and neglected older animals.
Looks as though your wormer has worked anyway!

flintybaby, either your mistaking one worm for another, or that's a very busy, well travelled worm. It may be a relative which would explain the family resemblance, you know, cousin or auntie :D

I shall call her Dusty because she went in the bin
I think YO is going to talk to the vet just in case there are signs of resistance to the wormer we use developing. I'm just hoping this is a 1-off, Mrs P has been out & about quite a bit of late & could have picked something up away from home. I guess it would be scarier of Dusty had her whole extended family with her when she fell out of Mrs P's bottom

Maybe it's the day-before-a-bank-holiday fever but I was ROLLING on the floor with laughter reading this thread. I don't normally find worms funny but I was seriously close to tears. Thanks for the giggle guys!
Iron Maiden...all amps should go to eleven and hope no more of Dusty's relatives appear!

We bought a colt from the sales and wormed him, and what fell out of his bottom doesn't bear thinking about.
His poo looked like something from a hammer horror. It was full of worms like that all in excess of 6 inches in length and some as thick as a pencil. I hung them on the fence there were that many of them. Eeeeeuw!

Bl---dy h-ll jo... does hanging them on the fence, work the same as hanging a dead crow on the fence to keep the others away then???:D:D:D

I hung them on the fence as a macabre art installation, Damien Hurst eat your heart out! What else do you do with worms of that calibre?

One of the other liveries at the yard wanted to take Dusty home & feed her to her chickens  Quite apart from the fact that she must be one hell of a toxic worm, I'm not sure that a chicken could eat something quite so big?
Wally - your story makes my outrage at Mrs P's single worm seem a bit pathetic :o Why did you hang them on the fence though? Some sort of strange Shetland ritual?? Like the Wicker Worm???

Do you swap your wormers around often? I'm amazed it grew that big
Have we decided on a name for the little wormy?

Everything gets done by the book - the vet advises on rotating onto different wormers year-on-year & the whole yard worms together at the recommended intervals. The roundworm life cycle is 3 months & Mrs P has been out & about going to different places all winter, so I guess she may have picked something up away from home just after her last wormer. Either that or for some reason the wormer is not effective on her - unlikely but not unheard of from what I can gather. I'll get a worm count done & take it from there :)
ETA: she is Dusty the worm

And his name is Wiggly Woo

Maybe we should delete 'at the bottom of the garden' and replace with 'up the bottom of Mrs P'
