Thought I would share this with you guys as it might help lessens someone elses fear if confronted with it! Max is on box rest and when I saw the size of his sheath I freaked out  After speaking to the vet he assured me is quite normal and very common in horses on box rest - wish they had fore-warned me of box rest side effects :o Anyhow, with some Danilon and more walking in hand it soon went back down to normal size :D

Why does it swell when they're on box rest?

Yeah, I agree, all men should have a bit of box rest now and again ;) The reason the sheath swells is all to do with fluids in the body not being pumped around normally and they just kinda pool to a low area.. Max's legs are in stable bandages but can you imagine trying to bandage that

That's the largest swelling from box rest that I've ever seen so I'm glad for the heads up.

Yeah that's why I posted it, as I thought if it helps someone else to not totally freak when presented with something similar :D

Hi there Skippys Mum :) Max has had his wooden blocks removed from his feet and the 'cast' from his leg. We are now currently halfway through his ten minutes walk out twice a day, the surgeon did a neat job and there are only about 5 inches of stiches to disappear now :D Due to surgery his shoes were removed and his feet are looking good without shoes, he is walking out well and is in pretty good spirits considering he has been on box rest for so long now and all that he's been through. I am really looking forward to when he is allowed out in the small 'rest' paddock as I am sure he would love a roll and to chat to his girlie mates over the fence. Two and a half weeks and counting......

So I was sat in the 6th form common room earlier and I saw that thread title. Of course at that moment I had 6 guys staring over my shoulder  I'm sooooo glad I decided not to click on it whilst at school :o:D

Hope the swelling goes down soon! Can imagine it's quite uncomfortable...

my old horse got a very swollen sheath on box rest and was in loads of pain, when i did get him out to walk him once he was sound enough, he reared with me and cam e VERY close to coming down on my head so be careful! this was totally out of character for him. had to get rid of him after that as he would (supposedly) never come sound again. gave him away as a companion, 48 hours turned out & his man-parts were back to normal!! (a year on, he's now completely sound & being ridden again,GUTTED!)

Why does it swell when they're on box rest?

Probably the same reason legs puff up, it's possibly lymphatic fluid that is pumped around by the movement of the muscles, so when they aren't moving, the fluid collects in various places due to gravity.

That's just a guess though.

Sorry to hear about that Gunner. Max is being a very good boy whilst being walked. He did get a bit excited earlier and did a couple of small bucks but nothing un-manageable :D He's much happier now he is allowed two small walks out a day and not long now until he's in the paddock :D The 'space hopper' went down within a couple of hours and he was in no pain with it at all.
