measuring saddles!

On ebay why do people give the D to D measurments of the saddle? and how do you measure them on your own horse without a saddle?

I think it's maybe when people are unsure of the actual size (medium, wide, x-wide etc) it's easier to measure D to D.

I would only buy a saddle off ebay if I knew what size my horse needed so if I had found what fitted I would measure it then compare.
