I changed stars rug to put him to bed and noticed he has two bald patches, one on each side, just around his stifle area, where back leg meets belly area, dont seem to be sore but they are a little warm. Didnt bother him by me touching them but not sure what they are from. Checked his rug, not signs of leg straps rubbing or anything. He is getting older (think he's 18-21ish) and as I bought him as a sympathy buy in august, this is the first winter Ive had him and cant speak to old owner, but I know she never rugged him before and knowin how gross he is if he had bald patches before, she probably wouldnt have seen them with all the mud he would be caked in! Just a bit puzzled, and slightly worried, not managed to take pic as phone dead, can take pics tomorrow though if anyone wants to see?

Not sure if this is any help....
but, I've noticed on my ponys rug, in the same area as you have mentioned, that he seems to be loosing a lot of hair as it is stuck to that area of his rug!! No bald patches just loads of hair on the rug!!
I just put it down to him losing his winter coat??:o

Nemolucy - thanks for your reply, Ive checked his rug and cant find any hair stuck to the inside in the right places for it to be that. Will take some pics tonight and will post them.:)

The same happened to Fi, the vet had a look and said not to worry, wasn't causing her any problems, my first thought was the rug, I would be interested to see what it is, let me know please:)

Sorry, the patches were in the same place, but just where hair had come away, no redness or sore patches, hope you get it sorted soon, finger crossed for you:)

I think it may be lice, not found anything as yet, need to get some powder, tack shop only had a huge tub and as he's only 12.1hh its a bit large and expensive for just him! Have got some parasite repel spray that is meant to kill lice mites fleas and ticks, so have put some of that on him! Fingers crossed its that and he'll stop going bald! Thanks guys!

could the leg straps on his rug be rubbing him?

That was my first though Palomino Mare, cant see any signs or indications that they are, but I have lengthened them incase they were.
