basically for the summer, im cutting down kaisers feed to just one feed per day, as he will be out 24/7 on good grazing. however, i know he still needs the same vits and minerals he would get from his 2 feeds per day,
so was going to half his feed, and add a good supplement so he gets all he needs without being a big fatty foal!
has anyone used d&h surelimb or topspec no3 youngstock supplement? both are about the same price for a 4/5kg tub, so just wondered if anyone had used them???

I use the naf youngstock supplement, although very powdery it extremely palatable :)

compared to the other ones, its very expensive tho, and as far as i can see, all have the same ingredients in them,

The Squig is not getting a thing!
She's an 'excellent' doer!!!
If I could, I would put her in a fatty paddock! Obviously she still needs her grub tho and grazing is fan dabby dozy. I think I will have a portly horse come the summer.............

i agree good grazing is great, but i still feel he needs all the vitamins etc to grow into a healthy young man! Will see what he is like on spring grass, he may be getting even more supplement and just some alfa A!!

You don't need to feed a youngster on 24/7 turnout that is the easiest way to make them hyper or fat, just buy a vit lick for him and bring him in if necessary to have a go at it or leave him one in the field

unfortunately kaiser doesent really 'do' licks of any kind, so if i put one out, i would prob just be paying for the other 3 horses in the field to have one!!! Will prob just end up giving him some alfa A with the supplement in it, that way i know he is getting all his vits etc, with no fattyness!
ps - he is on suregrow as it is designed to not make them hyper or fatty as it is fed in much smaller quantities than lots of other youngstock feeds

That sounds best then try to make it a small pinch of alfa a. I really don't think when there's grass youngsters need much of anything, atm if not much grass that's fair enough to feed, but any feed can make a pony fat if they're not burning it off etc

he def isnt fat! can still feel ribs, going through lots of growing at the mo, so think thats where all the feed is going:rolleyes:
he is a tb too, so not the average little fatty foal, but i will bear in mind what you say, and keep it a small bit of alpha A, he might even go back on hi fi lite again(can just see the look on his face:rolleyes::rolleyes:)

i agree with skewbald mad on this subject!! tis a bit worrying the idea of completly cutting out the food through summer, because of the essential vits and mins that they will lose out on which grass cant supply.
Calli is also on suregrow, but have considered halfing the feed too during summer, and topping up the nutrients with one of the youngstock supplements. Not sure which one yet though!! probably surelimb, or maybe the global herbs one...very confusing this is:confused:
we'll get there in the end:o

I have brought on a number of youngsters of different breeds and know what i'm talking about. In the summertime a vit supplement in a tiny amount of feed or in a lick etc is what I have found to be best every time, and have also been advised to go for by my vet
If you feed too much they get fat, grow too quickly and have joint problems etc. I know of a TB stud locally that has their youngstock on grass and hay alone and they are all healthy happy and are making big bucks at the TB sales ;)

my baby got hi-fi lite with a broad supplement and limestone flour to help his bones :) when he came to me he was on happy hoof, conditioning cubes, barley, youngstock mix and sugar beet!! one feed would fill a whole carrier bag (he came with 7 days feeds). We cut it right back coz he was totally overfaced. I think it it wise to keep on feeding, if kaiser is anything like kezzie was when he hits a growth spurt he'll go very rake like.

my two youngsters are currently (and will be in summer) fed a bit of Hi-Fi and Equivite general vit and min supplement with a salt lick available if wanted.:) out 24/7
