I have been trying a number of feeds and I am finding it hard to keep weight on my horse. She is heavly rugged, not over worked with no heath problems.

So I am looking for recomendations of horse feeds. I toyed with the idea of blue chip original but thought I would do some 'market research' and see if any of you guys could give me a better alternative.

Thanks

Well, my boy is about 150lbs underweight. He's a Trakehner/Hanoverian, 17.2hh, and should be about 1500lbs.
What I'm finding is working really well with him is all the hay he can get, a good mineral supplement, something with a high protein content (I use Nutrena SafeChoice which has 13%) and about 3/4 of canola oil each day. Slowly but surely, he's losing the ribby look and looks

I don't know what you have up there in terms of food, but focus on something with a high protein content-especially if you are working her, and look at adding some oil to her diet. Canola, vegetable, flax, whatever.

I have a TB/hanovarian with the opposite problem. She only has to look at food to put on weight.
When I did have a horse with weight problems I found that super barley rings did the trick. Weight without fizz.

What do you all think about blue chip?

well - what is your current feeding regime - brands and extras that you feed? Before I suggest something it would be helpful to know what isn't working yet :)

Re. blue chip - it has worked in some cases, but it doesn't address the core problem, which is that right now *something* about her diet isn't catering for her nutritional needs.

Is her worming routine up to date, and have you had a worm count done?

As well as considering what she is fed in the way of concentrates, what amount and quality of roughage are you feeding, and what is her access to grazing like?

The more details, the more helpful an answer we can give!

agree with RE, what is she getting just now?then it will be easier to suggest something like blue chip or top spec.

The best conditioning feed i've ever used has been dengie alf alpha oil

Are you feeding the correct volumes of each product, as recommended by the manufactorer? If you are not then your mare may be deficient in certain vitamins, minerals and trace elemrnts which would make weight gain difficult and slow.
Maske sure she has ad-lib forage (preferably hay for its higher fibre and dry content compared to haylage). Fibre is essential for healthy gut function and trickly feeding is a natural de-stresser which would encourage weight gain.
A diet based on fibre and oil, as well as light exercise, rather than cereals, will encourage weight gain and condition without fizz.
I think your mare would benefit from having a digestive enhancer added to her daily diet, to mimprove digestion so that she can utilise nutrients more efficiently and use them to gain weight.
Have you had her checked over by a vet recently, as issues such as an underlysing worm burden or virus can lead to weight loss/lack of condition.
Make sure also that she is not overheating as excess sweating could inhibit weigth gain.

Personally, i recommend Blue Chip though, as said, it may not be a quick-fix solution.

What is her current diet? Is she a stressy type prone to weight loss?

Good luck!
