When you are using a fulmer bit like so:

Do you always need to use the fumer loops or can it be used without?

I always use them with the loops, they can twist round in the mouth if not and then you lose the steering benefit. It's less of a problem with the snaffle with cheeks though have seen people use loops with them too.

I used mine for 6 months or so without the loops and had no problems!

you can use it without the loops however i would recommend you use it with them as it holds the bit in the correct postition and is more comfortable for the horse

I liked the look of it with the rings as looking for something to aid with steering ie. full cheek but also have the loose ring effect as he accepts the bit better, am I looking at completely the wrong thing?

it is probably the right thing, i got one with fixed rings and use loops on it and king seems to love it. also aids my steering!!! i use loops as i think it keeps it in a better place in his mouth, and he is fussy enough as it is already without having extra reason!!!

it is not realy loose ring ? the ring is attached the other side of the bars and especially with the loops on..it will not act the same way as a "normal" loose ring ?
(it also looked to be upside down to me ?)
Don't forget there is also a snaffle with cheek pieces as a similar but alternative option.
