If a mare is in season ie. squirting, winking etc. is that the time to put her to a stallion - that is when she is most receptive of him but does it mean that there is an egg in there ready and waiting?

Yes. The mare won't accept the stallion unless she is receptive. If it is a maiden mare she sometimes won't be quite as eager, but instinct does take over. She is only receptive for a few days though, so if you're going to breed her you have to get her to the stud asap. We normally breed the mare 2-3 times w/in about a week to make sure she takes.

If you take your mare to stud they should use a teaser stallion to establish how ready she is for covering.

If they don't use a teaser they will either cover her in hand (if she is ready) or they may turn her out with the stallion if he is well-mannered with his mares.

We would cover a mare in hand twice per day (at least) for as long as she was receptive.

Mares running with a stallion for natural serving would be covered every two hours or so (sometimes more) over the same period.

The shedding of eggs in the mare takes place toward the end of the period where she is most receptive to the stallion, as this gives egg and sperm the best chance of uniting to form a viable blastocyst.

For in hand covering I would have thought that was quite excessive? We cover daily after day three and I know alot of people think that is far to often and that every 48hrs is enough. and that to cover daily increases the risk of infection and twinning.

I guess if they are turned out it is more often anyway, I just think its probably a bit of a risk for not particularly increased fertility rates?

I have certainly never noticed our guy at it every two hours when he's out with his mares.

You're right, thats a stupid quote when I see it written.

Some stallions cover mares at around two hour periods, but not throughout the duration of the mare's heat. They may be more active in the mornings, less in the afternoon and more again toward the end of the day.

He would have to be going some to cover every two hours over 24 hrs over several days :D
