View Full Version : Scurfy legs when moulting :(

My gelding gets horribly scrufy legs every year when he moults. He doesnt end up with bald patches or anything, but it looks like really bad dandruff and constantly flakes off when I am brushing his legs.

The past few years i have kept it under control with weekly washing, but this year nothing is really clearing it up. He also has it just under his fetlocks which he didnt last year, it definately isnt mud fever, he has had that before and its not the same. He doesn't have a lot of feather either as he is a Welsh D.

Is there anything I can do, or put on his legs to get it cleared up. It seems to be quite itchy as he pulls his funny faces when I scratch it for him!

Ill be interested in the replies you get as my horse gets the same thing, only on his back legs though. He always gets it when moulting and it clears up as soon as the moult is over.

lavendar oil or wash might help?

magicalmac- Yep thats where my boy gets it mostly! From about his hocks down. Plus my boy has black legs so it's so obvious!

Ive never tried lavendar oil, would it not irritate the skin?

Shouldn't do, benefit is that flies hate the smell of lavendar also. I wash my mare with herbal essence lavendar shampoo for her scurfy legs (this morning actually - woo go me!) and they are competely scurf free now!

My horse has the same problem. I use Hibiscrub (recommended by my vet) which help.
