Just wondered on your thoughts - what mane cut gives Snowy the best cute factor - imagine him clean:eek:

LONG mane & tail!
If your children can't find the reins then put his mane (when it grows back) in an arab plait along the crest or his neck, it only takes a few minutes to do a loose one.

Cute both ways but prefer long mane. My shetland gets his tail cut to that length in the winter - just to avoid the mud:D. He's only got wee short legs and the mud is DEEP!!

Was going to say the exact same thing!!
My childrens shetty had a longer and thicker mane than that and they used to plait it out of the way, then get on and ride.:D

A Shetland pony needs his mane and tail. You should feel under his mane when it is cold, it keeps their necks lovely and toasty.
To hog a Shetland purely for aesthetic reasons is wrong, IMO. I have done it once when I took charge of a Shetland pony mare whose mane was one huge matl. I spent two hours trying to teaze it out and gave up and took the scissors to it. It grew back beautifully without the knots.
Please never, never hog your Shetland again unless you have good medical reasons. They need their manes and tails and it is not fair on the pony to do this.

Well, you won't be able to show him for about 2 years until it all grows back now.
Shetlands, of all the UK breeds look best with a mane, it's part of the breed standard, "abuntant mane and tail"

BTW if they are having bother finding the reins, just to a running plait while he is being ridden. They soon learn to hold their hands out of the mane.

I like the fact they have so much mane as it gives my children more to hold on to but mine are still very small so need all the help they can get!

Agree with Frances (and others).
I'd go for full mane and longer tail and plait the mane if it's causing a problem.

Def Hairy
I knew a hogged Sheltie once but that was due to the fact it has such horrible sweet itch, Shetlands without a health issue I think should be natural ;)

Natural all the way
Hogged doesnt suit a shetland as much as natural!

I have considered hoggging bruno in the past as think he would look cute in the trap but have opted against it but both my shetties have a pulled mane and tidy forelock and tail, makes keeping them tidy alot easier plus smudge is rubbing all his hair out at the moment and looks a mess so at least nosy people wont think he is neglected if he has a posh hairdo plus its easier to spray his lotion on his itchy bits!
