You need to get a western saddle fitted properly, just as you would an English one, especially as your horse is high withered

I have no idea about stones, again.
But, Im about 150 pounds, and 5'7" and I ride with a 15" western saddle, 17" english (well, now 17.5 but thats because me and mom had to find a happy medium between us)

As with English saddles, its about the size of your bum and not the size of the horse. If you are going for a treed saddle you will need to determine the width of saddle needed - full qh bars or semi for eg. If you go for treeless western then its not so important. Hope that is of some help. Do lots of googles in USA to get more detailed info. Good luck

there is this tip over here that if you have an english saddle the size for your western saddle will be 2 sizes down that of your english saddle. So for instance you ride english in a size 17 then you would ride in a size 15 for western. i would use full Qh bars if i were you, A good brand for high whithered horses is the showman brand in the states(my RI and i use the saddle because we both ride Tb type crossed horses).

Thanks for that- I ride in an 18 so would be looking for a 16- I had a fab time at the western clinic and so did mac- he was so much softer being ridden with the western reins although cos of his size I need to look for 8ft ones- I think WE could be converted but Mac is 21 so do not have a fortune to spend on a saddle cos who knows how long his ridden days may be and I need to save the pennies for any vet bills :)

Well i know i am looking for a show saddle by showman and they are on Ebay for sale at $950.00 which is like around 300-500 in the UK and thats for a show saddle so for a just normal (no blingage) you could get it cheaper.

Probably a 15 or 15 1/2 inch seat.

Best regards,
Harry

12.5 stone is about 175 pounds. A 15" seat sounds too small to me especially if there is much rise in the seat. I'm 5'2" and about 115 pounds and ride in a 15" seat. My saddle does have quite a bit of rise.

For a 175 pound person I would guess a 15 1/2" or 16" seat especially since women tend to carry more weight in the hips, butt, and thighs than men.

I don't know what size tree I would get for the horse. I would have to see a pic of him to guess.
