Ive had my clydesdale gelding for 9weeks now, and him being my first horse to have all myself I need some advice.

He came to me with nothing so Ive now finally paid for farrier, dentist , injections and treatment of his cut leg which he did on the first day (the day I got the insurance! so needless to say they didnt pay out!)

anyway im digresing... Im now ready to worm him, as I have no idea wether he was or not before I got him, but I would guess not as he didnt have anything else. He doesnt have an infestation as ive done the job of droppings check, and he has moved onto a field where the horses before were wormed reguarly.

thats the background, so which wormer do i buy as there are sooooo many and when do i give it to him!

My vets have a suggested program that they use. Why not give your vet a quick call and get there recommendation then you can get started on a suitable program.

Wouldnt mind some photos of your Clydie:D

Why not have a worm count done first to see if he needs worming.

Well congratulations on all that you have done for him so far, but oh dear nine weeks turned out with other horses and not wormed or checked?
The very first job with a new horse is to worm him or preferably worm count first to check his parasite burden before being allowed to graze with other horses. I'm surprised the other owners have not said so.
A good wormer for a new, healthy horse is Equest Pramox. It will treat all stages of redworm, plus tapeworm. For a big horse you will need two tubes and try to get the weight of your horse as near as possible to give the correct dose.
Good luck with your boy.

Just in response to the comment about being turned out with other horses , he's on his own at the mo as he has always been on his own, so he has horses over the fense but we are intergrating him slowly!

Oh that's always a good plan anyway, well done.

With worming I think Equest wormers are quite easier to familiar with and to remember when to give. Equest is usually given Summer/Winter time and Pramox is given Spring/Autumn time, there is a 13 week space period between them, or you could say you give Pramox in Spring, then 13 weeks later give Equest, then 13 weeks again give Pramox and so on.
You will need to know his weight roughly, but I tend to give them slightly over the dosage amount incase they spit any out, better to slightly overdose than underdose.

Would love to see pictures of your Clydie, I have a Clydesdale X TB mare :)
