Fascinating reading the stickied threads here!

I rode a pony when I was little who was a palomino golden colour but had white intermixed with his coat and black hairs mixed in his white mane and tail (or white hairs mixed in his black mane and tail, whichever way round). I am intrigued now as to what he could have been.

He didn't have darker legs or black points on his face so does that mean he couldn't have been dun?

Does he sound like a buckskin roan?

So that means that he would have been black, but with the agouti gene, and the cream gene, and roan with a cherry on top? Have I understood this right?

I think I might have a pic at home I can scan in.

He sounds like a sooty palomino... sort of like liver chestnut with cream. Palominos differ in shade just like chestnuts do, so you get some pale cream, some really golden cream, some that are almost a light chocolate colour. In the same way, colour of mane and tail can vary from completely white through to browny-grey.

Roan and dun would both have darker legs, buckskin would have black points.

Ooo thanks!

Here's that scanned pic of him just to confirm - please excuse my hands, I was only a kid! :o

Of course it's not the best picture, but I think you can see how grey his mane is/was. I have no idea if he's still with us come to think of it :( He was a special kind of pony, used to snarl at anyone who entered his stable and pretend to attack you, but if you just barged in and stuck a headcollar on him he turned to honey.

He's not actually sooty palomino, but he is palomino. The grey in his mane is just a variation that occurs in chestnuts too. I have a four liver chestnut mares; one has a liver mane and tail, one has dark brown mane and tail, one has silvery grey mane and tail and the last has a grey mane and tail with big white streaks.

Yours is very pretty!
