Went to do nemo this morning..... to be met with a swollen eye!!
His upper and lower eyelid is swollen and is warm to touch (doesn't mind it being touched;)) But there is no tears or discharge!
I think he may of poked himself in the eye with a branch or something:rolleyes:
So am I better washing it with warm water or leave it alone and keep an eye on it?? (excuse the pun)

Would reccommed placing a cold compress over it a few times today, if not better in morning, phone vet, don't take any chances with eyes.

Agree with above, does the actual eye look normal? No clouding? If so my gelding had something similar from cutting himself on a bramble. I cleaned it with salt water and it was healed with a week.

The eye itself looks fine, it's just the lids that are swollen so much that it looks closed.

My horse did this to himself a couple of weeks ago - gave himself a black eye somehow!

If there's no discharge and its not running at all then he's probably just knocked or poked it - is he stabled overnight? If so he could have rolled and whacked his head on the wall. Is he trying to open it and happy to do so? Cold compress it and keep an eye on it (no pun intended :o ) if it hasn't improved in 24 hours then call the vet.

If there is any discharge or he is "squinting" the eye shut and not trying to open it all then call the vet as it could be conjunctivitis which is the only infection really that can come on do suddenly and severely.

Yes he is stabled overnight and is trying to open quite happily, he doesn't seem to be in pain (he's letting me touch it!), but it does seem warmer than the other eye.
I thought he'd probably knocked it, but wanted to make sure as it isn't weeping or anything:o

D had this a few months ago and it turned out tha the had somehow poked himself in the eye and it had turned into an ulcer - so keep an eye on it (excuse the pun|!!!!;)) if it doesnt get any better within a couple of days im afraid it will be a vet jobby! xx hope all is well soon:)

You can never be too careful with eyes - I was horrified when I found my boy with his eye swollen to the size of a plum! :o I rang my vet though at the time and she said if it isn't weeping and he's trying to open it he's probably just knocked it and nothing too much to worry about :) The swelling went down in about 2 days, daft horses eh!

He has a show on Sunday, can't take him with his eye like that.
If it slightly swollen do you think we could go, or is this being cruel:o,
Please don't think bad of me for asking this question, it's just that I've never had to deal with anything more than a scratch before:o

My boys eye was back to almost normal in 24 hours you could hardly tell it was swollen :) And he wasn't the least bothered about it - eating and charging around the field as normal. See how he goes but he will probably be back to normal by Sunday I wouldn't worry too much, if there's no discharge and he doesn't seem painful to the touch then he's probably just whacked it in his stable rolling or something :)

I wouldn't take chances with eyes, I'd give the vet a ring.

salt water, if it goes on too long get the vet as it could be a cut in the eye, but at this time of year when the wind is up they are getting all the winter mud blown in their eyes as there is no or little grass coverage. Mine both had it a few years back when it was windy and lots of sand on the ground where they put their faces all day long.
