View Full Version : The new rider mommies thread

Well here it is, we now have a new 'sticky' new rider mommies thread. So feel free to use it! It is for any discussion related to pregnancy/babies/toddlers broadly in relation to horses/horse owning etc and to get general advice/ideas etc from those like-minded horsey people who have been there before you! I will be keeping an eye on this thread as moderator and also will close it and start another when it gets too enormous.
Remember this is a public forum that can be accessed by those who are not members so please do not post photos of your children or details that could give away where you live or any information you do not want on the general internet.

A good start would be a bumps/babies list so we know who we are...if you want to pm me your estimated due date and/or baby's name and birthdate then I will add them here at the top of the thread. Sorry if I forget anyone, just give me a poke and remind me!

I aim to have them both in bed for about 7.30pm, J will normally sleep through the night from then and we are feeding Emmy at 11ish and then when ever through the night..everyone usually up at 7am - 8am....I agree with the needed time to myself...just went to bed again tonight....read about 4 pages of my book and then fell asleep!!! zzzzzzzz :D:D:D:D

Beth was 9lb 9, a positive lightweight compared to some of yours! She was a section. We have a lot of big babies in the family so I have hoping the next one isn't much bigger! We have had up to 13lb babies in the family in the past
She is almost 2 1/2 and goes to bed at 8pm, officially it is 7.30, really it is always 8

Lewis was 10lb 2oz - natural birth  we didn't know he was that big they predicted 8lb 7 oz, we had a rough time.
He's been sleeping from 8pm to 6am for just over a month now and doesn't even want his bedtime milk - I think he has so much in the day that it see's him though. He's nearly 5 months.

I had this, my eldest's size was a complete shock to everyone and my middle one was predicted by a scan at 37 weeks(had a horrid OB who tried to get me to be induced early, HA!)to have a birth weight of 7-7 1/2lb, but my midwife and I knew he'd be another biggun!

hi everyone
better add mine....excuse the long list:o
bump due 1st September but will be here by 4th August at latest as i;m not allowed to go any later then that due to obstetric cholestasis. (OC) (my liver gives up the ghost while i'm pregnant:rolleyes: so can cause pre term birth and more worringly stillbirth. (it's the thing which they check for if you get REALLY itchy in pregnancy)
My exsisting 'babies' well..........
Georgina - 02/06/99, 8lb 6oz, 3 weeks late, induced, normal 4hr delivery, had OC but undiagnosed, daughter now has learning difficulties.
Scott - 18/04/2002, 9lb 9oz, 2 weeks early, normal 2hr delivery, had OC but undiagnosed.
Luke - 21/06/2005, 6lb 12oz, 3 weeks early, induced, normal 23.5hr delivery, had 'managed' but very severe OC.
Rebecca - 04/08/2006, 6lb 2oz, 5 weeks early, induced, normal 25min delivery:eek:had managed OC but also contracted Strep B so Rebecca was very poorly and given the 'ok' at 4.5 months old, when she had regained all lost weight to be her original baby weight. (was 6lb 13oz at 5 months old)

Is it just me or can pregnancy cause balance issues? My disability makes me a bit unsteady on my feet at the best of times, but recently I seem to fall over for no reason at all. (Like my horse sniffing my pockets for treats). Makes me feel quite vulnerable when handling my mare - even though she is pretty well mannered. At 20 weeks I don't even have a "bump" to speak of yet. I am quite worries how I will cope when I get bigger.
I hope baby does not mind gettting knocked about a bit.

yes i've always found it affects my balance and makes me a bit clumsy. You should see what you'll be like when you get a bigger bump.....i still think i can squeeze through gaps that i um, can't:o
this bump gets a bit of a knocking sometimes although i do try to be careful. I know when i was about 18weeks i got really overprotective of my bump and lost a lot of confidence in not getting hurt but that seems to have gone now. (i'm 22wks now)
i was pleased though that bump can still put up with naughty foal moving sharp though on friday. (she didn't like being microchipped much, pony not baby;))
i have my 4d scan on the 11th may so looking forward to that and will know what i'm having then too:)

I had my 4D baby scan yesterday and now have a short DVD and 4D pics:)
oh and we found out that we're expecting a BOY. Our hospital has a policy of not saying what the gender is so we wanted to find out at our private scan. Everything is looking well, although he looks a lot fuller in size then the 4D scan of our last baby (girl) at the same gestation.
so this will make our final count of children to be 3 boys, 2 girl's:)

Your scans are amazing! We thought about it, but didn't do it for No.1 so just had the detailed anatomy one at 20 weeks. Em looked like her brother on that scan too! It really brings it home that there is a small person in there when you see them on the screen. We are back to our birthweight now and it is hard to believe that something of that size was wriggling about crushing all my organs 4 weeks ago....no idea how she fitted in there!! I'm left with a really nice squishy stomach, but I can tuck it back into trousers now so that is something!!!! Not made it into joffers yet......but will try soon!
Are your other children excited about their soon to be new brother?? I am pleased with how our big brother is with his sister....he is a bit of a terror when tired, but so far has always been very good to her, lots of kisses and rubs her feet when she crys!
Sun went out to grass last night - typical, got up this morning and can't see more than a metre! But that should really help her leg loosen off. We are really enjoying getting out for a quick walk about the place, she is very forward and I am going to keep her in the gag a little longer!
Must head out...bought the wrong nappies...down to the last one and someone is making faces and squirty noises!

i didn't have the 4d scans for my first three children as you couldn't get them then but i had it done for babies no 4 and this one (no 5) mainly because my pregnancy condition puts me at a large risk of stillbirth in later pregnancy so wanted to make sure i;d have a glimpse of baby even if everything all goes wrong.
The squishy stomach doesn't last forever;) although i always found it funny tucking it into my jeans:o
wow your baby has done really well getting back to birthweight already:) my first two were biggish babies but my last two really struggled to regain their weight to birth weight, my youngest took 5 months to get to hers (but she did drop a awful lot of weight due to my condition)
My other children are quite looking forward to having another brother now although they were not too impressed at first. my eldest is 9 in a week or two and she rather embarrasingly asked me if "daddy and you know how babies are made?, and how to stop having them!" it's bad when your kids start telling you that:eek: my youngest daughter is probably looking forwards to having a baby to help/play with the most though (she's 21 months)
Lacey probably won't be ridden now until after i have this baby so have mixed emotions at the moment as to what it will be like when i get back on board as we will have both had a bit of time off. (spooky pony having had time off + unfit new mum = possible disaster:rolleyes::))

Update:
I am riding two or three times a week, was back on board after a week and a bit. I dont have enough energy to keep mollie going in the arena for long which causes me to have a horrible leg position, hacking out is easier as she is forward going - been out on our own a few times. SUCH FUN!!!! Started to canter a bit better. Its going to take time. Mollie is being sold at the end of june, i was going to buy her but I wont get the riding time I would want against the cost. Looking for something else in the mean time.

Hello hello....
............Glad to hear everyone is okay. I've been back in hospital with the same infection...deep joy...been out for a week now so we shall see if they have cleared things up this time. Must mention things to my Dr in my 6 week check....
Things going well at home with small baby and toddler. She is starting to take more of an interest in all around which is nice to see again.
J and I had the pony at the vet school yesterday to investigate the wonky leg as turning her out and taking for walks has not resolved things as I had hoped. We got good new and not so good. There has been a lot of deterioration in the joint since the last x-rays in 2005, but they are going to medicate it for me and are very hopeful that this will make a big difference to her. So we go back on Thursday...another little trip out for her! She was so happy to have a change of scene...not been in the trailer for over 3 months!
Best go, all of yesterdays housework to do :D

aaah yes but bodies are like horses...odd things that don't always make sense;)
my 1st i put on 3 stone and squishy stomach stayed one size bigger then normal until i had my second nearly three years later where i put on another 3.5 stone. Then within 8 months all squishy stomach from 1 and 2 dissapeared:confused:
Then number 3 meant weight gain of 2.5 stone and again squishy stomach that stayed until after no 4 was born (14 months later) then all but went again although stayed a little heavier.
this time........still pregnant but only put on 2st. hoping it will all go this time too:D
I was alsways told rising trot is good to get your stomach muscles back a bit as well.:)

I'm quite pleased with my weight I put on 2 stone and I had a huge baby and too much fluid, now I'm 3lbs lighter than I was pre-pregnancy but I've been working out in the gym as well as riding. I go on holiday in 3 weeks so have been trying really hard to get into some kind of decent shape, although round my belly button is loose and gets tucked in my trousers - still have hopes that'll go.

have you had your postnatal check yet? if you had a big baby it could be that your stomach muscles have seperated ( mine did with baby no 2 as he was 9lb 9oz and i'm 5ft. ) my gp gave me a membership to a local gym free of charge and they worked out special exercises to help get it back quicker. i got told swimming helps too (and good excuse to take baby swimming, no longer need to wait til after jabs)
hope you have a lovely time on holiday though:) i've just come back from holiday and i must admit the change of scenery/rest was lovely:)

Time management, organisation and routine are the key for me:)
I have four horses and three children ( with number four due in four weeks) I don't find it difficult to manage, the fact your friends with kids are non-horsey speaks volumes:rolleyes:
If you want something enough you will find ways to manage, over the winter months I would go to the yard after the school run and muck out, do the nursery run and go back to the yard with the youngest asleep in the car, sometimes I could ride in the school lunge or put one in the horse walker, then bring in,feed and back for the school/nursery pick-up.
It is quite a hectic life and I never stop, so not for the faint hearted but I wouldn't change my children or my horses:D
It also helps that I have a fantastic husband who supports me 100% and gives me plenty of time for me to spend with my horses, as well as never complaining about the ever spiralling costs:rolleyes:

this is pretty much how i cope except with 4 children (no 5 on the way) and 2 ponies. Biggest god send i have is that the ponies are kept 5 mins walk from the school and 10mins walk from my house and they can live out although i do have stables. i don't drive which makes life harder though.
my hubby isn't the best as he doesn't like horses much but does understand its my hobby and knows life is nicer for him if i have my ponies as then he can do some things he likes doing (such as playing computer games a LOT;))

My husband is horsey too so we share it all 50/50 and since we also share our riding cob he still gets worked when I am pregnant (that makes me sound like a brood mare :D this is actually only my second pregnancy and we are planning only the two kids so this should be the last one - yay will actually be able to plan horsey things well in advance!!).

ask your doctor but sometimes taking zinc can help morning sickness/tiredness etc. or a prenatal supplement (i just took zinc as couldn't keep a prenatal multivitamin down.

Just found this. Can we please add Alexander to the list? He was born on the 13th of march 08 and weighed 7lbs 4 and was a month early.
We had some major cardic issues with him in utero leading to me being in hospital for 10 days on strong cardio drugs to drop he heart beat from the 230s that it was running at!! After the 10 days they decided to ECS me.
Alex was born after a bit of a nightmare c sec. ~In the 1st hour of life he was cardioverted(heart stopped and restarted) and ventilated in neonatal ICU. He spent another 2 weeks inthe ICU and then came home.
It has been a rocky start but now he is healthy and happy. At 12 weeks he weighs 14lbs 6.5 and loves the horses. Can't say that Max likes him though lol He just huffs in Alex's face and wanders off ( you can almost her him muttering " blinking kids making noise, disturbing me peace, huff ") The other 2 like him and he has "sat" on Guinness allready :)

The only thing i coul2d eat in those months was ham and white bread sarnies :p Don't think its a good cure but it helped me.

Yeah fizzy drinks is good for morning sickness, Also accupressure bands were my lifesaver! I didn't have morning sickness....I has all day sickness with both of mine!
As for the 'how do you cope' question...Not sure actually! I am a single mum with a part time job and full time at university. I couldn't do it if they did not live out! But really you just find time...well I do anyway! The hardest time was when Kazz was v. unwell and needing IV antibiotics 3x a day and was on complete box rest. My kids were 1 and 4 when that happened and that was HARD!
Esther, you can add my children to the list when you get time...:)

Hi
I rode throughout my last pregnancy (right up to the date delivered) although I did not know i was expecting !!!
Strange I know but was under GP as I have polycystic overy syndrome and stupid GP had mis diagnosed cyst of a baby!!!
Had he not prescribed so many pain killers the baby might have moved and I would have known she was there.
Anyway back to the point I have had three children in all and the 1st two I gave up rideing whilst pregnant both deliveries were very long and complicated whilst the last little surprise just popped out literally, anyway my point is you should do what you are comfortable doing don't take any unnecessary risks and just relax and enjoy - believe me you will appreciate your horsey time one the little ones arrives :)

i do enjoy being kept busy, must be a bit mad huh?

On Tuesday afternoon my OH had gone to a concert in london so my son had to come out with me to feed my horses. I poo-pick my field daily (don't know why, i just HAVE to do it). So he watched me do that. He seemed in a really mellow mood so i decided to school one of the horses i work on there. At first my son was a bit unimpressed & started to grumble but after 5 mins of watching he was amused (i did wave to him as i passed him which helped!)
Oh, my son was secure in the tackroom with a bar across to keep the horses out before anybody has visions of a pushchair sitting in the middle of the school:D
The horse worked well & son was entertained. If only it could always be that way...

Hiya, glad to see a mum's section!
not allowed to ride in this pregnancy due to spd, but my lovely pony doesn't like me riding whilst preg anyway!
at 7 1/2 months preg with my first we had an accident, winston tripped and he nearly killed himself trying to protect me and my bump. hospital staff couldnt understand why i was screaming that i needed a vet not a doctor lol.
since then he will try every trick in the book to stop me getting on!
how do you put a price on a horse willing to risk it's life for you?

Hi, I just wanted to introduce myself. My names Carla I have two boys one aged 3 and the other 21 months.
I have been waiting to get my own horse for a few years now and finally picked up my Welsh part bred this morning. Luckily my youngest baby fell asleep in the car following the lorry to the new yard so I only had one child and one filly to contend with! She jumped out the box like a nerves kangaroo and I just thought what have I done. After settling down with a juicy hay net and a syringe of wormer she seems much quieter so the real fun starts tomorrow. Feeling bit lonely, I've spent the best part of a day hanging over her stable door.
I've got so many thoughts at the moment I just got my self in a pickle and don't know where to start, its just all a bit over whelming for both of us. Did anyone else feel like this when they got thier first horse?
Sorry for the story!!!!

Yes, when i first had my mare i felt exactly the same. Didn't have my son then so it was probably easier than it is for you with 2 children! :)
I'm sure once your horse settles it'll all fall into place. NR is always a good place to come for advice etc.

Hello all,
I've forgotten to reply to this thread although I did post an announcement separately a week or so ago. But saw the question mark by my little boy's name on the first page and so thought I'd better update on here too.
I gave birth to a little (well 9lbs 8 so not so little) boy on the 11th June. Labour was vile, was allergic to both the gas and air and the pethadine. 2 epidurals didn't take effect thanks to an old spinal fracture so 26 hours in, they offered me an emergency c-sect and I bit their hands off literally. All fine in the end though and was definitely worth it. Oliver is a little cracker and I am loving being a mum. No idea how you guys manage to keep horses and have kids as he's definitely a handful although my lovely two staffies are still getting their TLC. Am hoping to get riding again in a month or so's time once my wound is properly healed - won't be Arnie who is still on loan in Hampshire but have a few friends with pones who have offered me some rides.
So all well from here. A recent pic for you.

I went 5 days over with my second and then discovered something that can really bring on contractions......please don't laugh (too much as that might work too), but I got this from my natural birthing book, I twiddled my nipples (in a very bored way while watching the telly, not sexual at all) - baby arrived 2 hrs later!! Embarassing but true andit might help (my doctor later said it's deffinate thing to release theright hormone).:D

You guys should go on some of the baby web sites, lots of "I'm overdue, pls hold my hand" threads which inevitably end in a baby, but start off with some very explicit instructions about how to get things going, including that mentioned by Clava!!
