Planning kezzie's show campaign for this year (all of 2 shows ). First show is july, and aswell as his welsh D 4 year old and over, i was planning on entering a plain and simple BTO inhand. There are no restrictions on this class, it's simply best turned out any horse any age. Obviously he'll be au natural in the welsh class, with the simple plait at the top of his mane. Should i do anything different for the BTO class? i was thinking (just to show i'd made an effort ;) ) of putting a trellace plait in his mane between classes, or would this be frowned upon, even in a non breed class?

Hiya, I would leave the mane natural how a true Welshie would have it. Even though its best turned out, the horse/pony still needs to be turned out correctly.
Hope that helps :)

ah, ok, i wasn't sure if BTO was judged on turnout or type. In my PC days they always seemed preoccupied with checking the soles of our boots and how clean the stirrup treads were  is there anything i should do differently (handling wise) between breed and BTO or just treat them the same?

well yes, that is what BTO is about, cleanliness! soles of boots, inside of noseband, stirrup treads, inside of hooves oiled, clean under tail etc.
it is judged on turnout - but to plait a welsh would be incorrect turnout.
handling-wise everything is the same but be careful not to tread in any droppings in BTO!

You could put the ribbons through his plait, looks like a bit more effort against the plaited's, just make sure it's all done perfectly. ;)
Mane and tail will need to be completely knot free, and I'd keep a baby wipe in your pocket for emergency cleaning. Not sure what headwear Kezzie is wearing, but unless he can be trusted not to slobber and it's first class of the day, I would avoid a white halter, as smart as they look.
Make sure you're wearing brown gloves and carrying a cane. I know it's not really the norm for welsh handlers, but I'd put your hair in a bun and hairnet and wear a hat of some description, that way you won't lose marks for not wearing one. Same for a tweed rather than a waistcoat, they just look more finished IMO. I presume you will be tidying his mane and switching his tail, I'm not sure what the current fashion is on tails but most judges I've been under prefer them long.
Handling wise, just try and avoid poos and slobber!

brown gloves and a cane i have already :) i'll be buying a beagler in the next few weeks to wear. i'm reluctant to touch his mane and tail but i'm thinking of asking his breeder about the correct way to tidy up his tail! haven't a clue how to do it myself :o have hairnets and a neat clip to tidy it up. I don't have a tweed jacket but again that's on the shopping list ;) the welsh class will be before the BTO. if he did slobber all over his halter, i'd use his bridle but am i more correct using reins or a coupling and lead?

reins with a riden bridle, coupling and lead with an inhand bridle.
