I always thought that Dartmoor ponies grew up to 12.2hh. Do dartmoor hill ponies have a different maximum height?
Anyone who has any...feel free to put pics up of there dartmoor or dartmoor hill ponies too.:)

I may be wrong but I though Dartmoor ponies were pure breds and hill ponies those generally mixed up from running all sorts on the moor to breed pit ponies in the past. I have certainly seen some moor ponies more like shetlands than anything else. I think genreally most moorland ponies are smallish ie 12 hands or under.

there was a larger one advertised for rehoming from the DPTC on projecthorses he was in the 13hh+ section so some obviously do go a bit bigger

Hi,
I have Echo and Freebie, dartmoor hill ponies that came !
from Tavistock in Oct 06. Echo is just fractionally under 13hh atm, his passport states that he is two this month, but was obviously a yearling when I bought him!
Freebie is very slightly smaller, both in build and height, but is croup high, so could possibly make 13-13.1.
Have attached some pics for you....

Damn, that didn't go according to plan.
Pictured is Echo, taken last July, the day before he lost his manhood!
This should be Freebie....

thanks everyone,
Piccolo is looking rather 'dartmoorish' (i'm impatient to know what she'll be like in the end!!) but is 10.3hh already at 7 months old.
I will try and get some pics tonight as now she has been bathed she is looking less like a wooly miniture mammoth and more like a finer pony then expected with a pretty head. I have noticed there is a awful lot of variation in dartmoor hill ponies which is why i don't really know if thats what she could be. someone else thought she looked fell x like but now her winter coat is going i don't think she really has enough bone, the body shape to be fell x.
she is opinionated, strong minded, immensley strong for her size, cheeky but fun and sane and not with the slightest bit of malice. she is also very intelligent and has gone from wild and unhandled to leading, bathing, grooming, tying and picking up front feet in just 6 weeks! tonight is her first lesson in walking out round a quiet bit of the village.

I saw a pic of a fell cross the other day and she has similarities to that too, not sure what the cross was though :D

I have 2 dartmoor hill ponies..one shetland x about 9.2hh and one that is about 11.2hh that looks more exmoor than anything else. It just really depends on what stallions are about, plenty will be bigger than my 2 and some of the moorland ponies near me on Bodmin Moor are part welsh D and some are 14hh +..you pay your money and take your chances really if you buy at the pony sales, I dare say most of them have precious little 'true' Dartmoor left in them..and the sad thing is that the little bay colts that are the more true to type are the ones that get sold for minimum price of 8 guineas(plus vat and £10 for their passport) and end up with the dreaded meat men.. and the coloureds go for good money.

yes i know what you mean, see i have seen 'true' dartmoor's and i don't think she's one of them but could be a dartmoor hill pony. I didn't get her from the sales but i have a feeling either her or her mum was at a sale at some point. she's only 7 months now and was weaned at 10 weeks:eek: not sure how old they have to be to be at the sales but must be about 6 months i assume? she's vey very dark bay. anyway will put her some pics later tonight or tomorrow
