Sorry to be a bit thick but I am goint to be getting my stable painted at the weekend (friends son doing it!). What sort of paint do you use? Is it mat? Odour free? One coat?!!!

Any advice?

Thanks,

Lucy

Is the stable timber or masonry? Timber will need undercoats then a suitable top coat if using paint (gloss, satin or mat) but most timber stables receive a timber treatment such as Culprinol as a "clear" or stained finish. If the stable is masonry then a suitable external masonry paint (Weathershield or similar). Whatever you do make sure it's not toxic (Creosote is toxic, but should not be available anymore).

well its just painted brick I think, but didnt know if it had to be special non toxic paint. Its really to just freshen it all up and get rid of inherited skid marks up the walls!! My horse is out 24/7 but its nice to have a clean bedroom in case he ever had a sleepover!

External masonry paint would probably be fine, I'm not sure if they do a low odor one , but if he doesn't have to be in it then wait until any smell has passed. Dulux trade weathershield do a range of external masonry paints - some are high performance (gloss maybe) and may be scrubbable (after a sleepover!). Check out the literature before hand and contact Dulux if in doubt, it would be worth asking them about toxicity of paints as animals can be very stupid about licking things.

A word of warning.

My two ponies were on a large livery yard and they painted all the stables at the beginning of summer when they were all staying out at night.

The painting was fine, and I put mine back in a few days later as he had time off the grass because he is laminitic.

The stable staff then used real creasote (banned now) to do all the wood parts. Unfortunately, the ****** idiots didnt put my ponies out!!!!!

When I arrived mid afternoon, one was lying down with his head pushed up against the wall, groaning, with a massive big headache. He also coulnt breath and could hardly get up for us to take him out the stable.

Emergency vet came and gave him some jabs and ventapulmin to keep his airways open for a few days after.

He had CHEMICAL BURNS right down his throat and nasal passages, which became partially paralysed, he had to be fed sloppy pony pellet soup for about 4 weeks.

He is OK now, but still chokes and coughs a little sometimes when he eats and then the food comes down his nose.

Be careful because someone else could make a mistake like this even if you are careful yourself!!

Totally agree - as mentioned Creosote is toxic and banned. Always check any trade literature before use.

Although creosote is banned the substitute is still really doedgey stuff. My hubby has been ill after treating our fencing and we have now made the conection. I don't get ill so muggins here has to do it next time
