She has either rubbed it or caused a sore where she's been proping herself up and there's a patch the size of the palm of my hand that is sore and weeping and the top layer of skin is coming off.

I was thinking anti-septic cream and sudocreme...any other ideas

I'm kinda toying with the idea of pestering my vet again to see if it could be related with what ever is wrong with her but I know he'll sell me an exspensive cream!

I'd wash the area (am assuming it's at the top of the tail?) with a weak solution of a antiseptic wash like hibiscrub, and would prob cut back some of the hair around the area so there's a perimeter of healthy skin. I'd put on any antiseptic cream (something you've used before and know she doesnt react to) - I use betadine ointment - but sudocreme or udder cream is good too.

Things is, as you already said, you really need to work out what the underlying issue is; why is she rubbing so much - localised skin infection/sweetitch/habit? Suspect that until you treat that she'll continue to rub and make herself sore.

my pony's itchy skin has got progressivley worse as she's got older. she has to have a steroid injection every 3 months to make her less itchy. she had just rubbed a massive patch away & the vet has said the best thing to put on it is sudocreme mixed with antibiotics he gave her, then when it's run out, just the sudo creme on it's own. I also find aloe vera gel, the kind you get in the local chemist, really good for itchy bits. it's really cooling and the scratching seems to stop.. for a while anyway.

btw, don't know how long you've had your horse at the current yard, but my vet has said to me in the past, they get a lot of itchy skin problems with horses who are kept right near the coast, something to do with the salt air. nothing you can do about it other than move but just interesting to know

We use Protocon Cream. It's quite expensive to start with, but the tub is big and lasts for ages.

I alwways see the Camarosa ads in mags, and went to the website, it looks good for everything, havent got it myself yet, but may go that way for soothing his sweetitch this year.

I use savalon cream with garlic powder mixed in to keep flies away, as well as all the usual sweetitch remedies.

I know savalon cream wont sting as I find the savalon and dettol liquid DOES sting.

Also use udder cream with garlic powder. If the garlic powder stings when it is mixed in, then just sprinkle a bit on top.

if it is weepy it is best to use wound powder to dry it up

Of course, forgot about the wound powder, thanks for the reminder, but that usually comes next month when he is bald and open sores. Hope we can avoid it this year.
