I have decided to start making a schooling plan, as even though hacking is great fun for both of us and now we don't have any mounting issues when it comes down to schooling we need more of a plan to stick to. I have been working on our sitting trot and circle work lately though.

Anyway I have a show coming up in August so I want to be prepared. I am only entering for a clear round anyway and it won't be high. Need to see what heights they do first.

Just brought 4 sets of jump wings today and eight poles so will be able to do a lot more now.

These are my initial plans:
May: Trotting poles, serpentine, figures of 8, cantering on a 20 metre circle, transition work, popping over small cross pole jump in trot
(All of these I am doing at the moment but just need a bit more work)
Using her back end more

June: (All of above) Canter poles, canter more rhythmic more transition work, popping over a cross poles and straight jumps

July: Putting everything together and working on the weaker points. Jumping a course of four jumps, including a double. Height around 3ft or less.

August: Ready for show.

How does this sound? Obviously I don't want to over school her and make her sour but she loves her jumping and is already jumping a 2ft straight log jump no problem.
Is there anything I am missing out on?
How would you go about getting a horse to be nicely schooled and jumping well? I hope I do not sound too ambitious.

I will be having lessons fortnightly if possible! Or when ever I can afford it! And will hire a course of show jumps when ready.

I am thinking of schooling her around 2-3 times a week which is usually for around half an hour or until she has done something good. Like today for example I stopped as soon as she went over the trotting poles nicely when lunging then cooled her off.

Forgot to add, my mare is 14.2hh tb cross, forward going and rather fit. Up to weight now :) and I ride most days usually hacking but schooling at least once a week and lunging a few times a week.

Thanks for reading!

Have you considered taking your pony to a show to get it used to the site and sounds ? No good doing all of the fantastic preparation at home, and then you get to the show only to find your pony panics and is overwhelmed by the atmosphere.

The best preparation you can do is take a picnic and your pony to any old show and ride around and get used to the scene.

No didn't really think of that, so thanks for that point! I have spoke to her previous owners and they did local shows with her.
Anyway if she is unsettled on the day I won't participate.
Also I would be doing a schooling plan whether or not I am taking her to a show anyway as she needs some schooling rather than just hacking all the time. Plus she loves her jumping :)
