how many of you hack out with something on you?
how many of you hack out with something on the horse?
how many of you do both?

just being nosey!!!

i wear tabard and pony has quarter sheet, it's part of my insurance and it's in the highway code, as we all follow that at all times don't we:rolleyes: also have yellow trousers and coat, depending on weather.

serious note i found a website and signed the guestbook after lady's horse was fatally by car. she is a stranger to me. closer to home my friends' horse was fatally hit by a coach and if they had been riding something small they would not be here either. if you want details of the site, please pm me, they are non profit making and sell merchadise to raise awareness. i did 5 mile hack on the roads last night, we tend to forget that country lanes are the worst, i'd like us to be around to ride another hack, what would you do without your four legged friend?

I have the following stuff, which I wear depending on weather: -

* Waterproof yellow hi-viz Bomber jacket - warm and waterproof
* Tabard type thing with LED lights - great in summer cos light weight
* Normal yellow Hi-vis tabard - will go over my BP and warmest coat if not raining just really cold.

Horse has: -
* Mark Todd fleecy lined full hi-viz yellow wrap around exercise sheet - only worn in winter.

I wear hi-viz 90% of the time but sometimes I forget, I know it makes you more visible it cannot be denied, the proof is there on many web-sites as stat's and video evidence but sometimes I just plain forget, not an excuse but a fact of life.

I always wear a bright yellow tabard and have a high viz band around my hat.
I am going to get the nose band too when I next go to the tack shop.

I ride in country lanes and have noticed, as i'm sure we all have, drivers are much less careful now and really consider us in their way.

I always wear a reflective + fluorescent tabard whatever time of day it is. Tia has boots, but I don't always put them on. She does have bright white legs though.

It's definitely getting more scary riding on the roads, although I actually feel safer riding on my own than in a group now - drivers seem to get more cross and frustrated when there are three or four of you, especially if you are riding two abreast, which we tend to do if there is a youngster in the group. Unfortunately, because my horse is very good, We always end up on the outside, nearest the traffic. I don't want to play that game any more!

When I ride out on my own, I don't stay right in to the edge though, i do tend to ride a couple of feet away from the edge, just to try and slow the traffic a bit.

i always wear something - tabard at minimum, and if it's at all cold enough i've got a hiviz fleece with sleeves. i have a hiviz exercise sheet that pony wears when it's cold enough. i've been looking for a mesh one to wear in summer if we do roadwork, which we don't do much of.

I hack out only down a private track / lane and around my neighbouring farmers land (he's great he lets us on it anytime we like!) and I still wear a hi viz tabbard and so does OH. The reason is: I can be spotted from the sky and we do get a lot of low flying MOD craft and also helicopters and, the postman can come hurtling down at any time!!!! Plus, I think if I did have an accident I would be easily seen for the air ambulance (I know that is morbid but you never know).

We have allsorts. In summer Daffy is more likely to be wearing hi viz than me as I won't use tabards after almost hanging myself from a tree with one, but we always have at least a hat band on and his white ear veil.

Daffy has (don't use everything together mind!)
- 4 leg bands (good for summer)
- 4 boots (quite stiff but very reflective)
- 4 boots (bright green straps, not that hi viz really)
- bridle kit
- fleece lined exercise sheet
- unlined exercise sheet
- mesh exercise sheet (it's surprisingly bright)
- breastplate
- white fly fringe - not strictly hi viz, but it does stand out

I have
- hat band (which is pretty much never off my hat)
- jacket which i've ordered a replacement for
- gloves (somewhere!)
- a fluorescent yellow polo shirt, although that isn't here yet

And if I want I can put some of Daffy's leg bands around my boots.

where did you get your mesh one from, and does it go under the saddle? does it seem comfy for them having the mesh under the saddle, if it does?

i have a tabbard but it doesn't get worn much as my bright pink joules jacket is pretty much fluorescent anyway :D
we only hack on the quiet backroads anyway and we rarely see more than one car

I have a tabard and a choice of hat cover or band -

Harry has Nose band, leg bands, martingale band, tail band but his tail is too fat!! and an fleeced lined exercise sheet which i only tend to put on if he's clipped and cold otherwise he gets too hot .

Can you pm the website so can have a look please

It is a Masta one, got it from Equestrian Clearance a couple of years ago. It does go under the saddle, he doesn't seem to mind it as it really is thin. When I use it I fold the front back over under the saddle flaps and this stops it slipping back at all.

I couldn't tell you if they still make it, but I'm sure there are still some floating around somewhere if you ring.

We ride out in tabbards. I have a bright orange browband too. In cold weather we have hi-viz quarter sheets. I have some hi-viz boots for Jazz but she hates them. After her leg injury she hates things round her legs.

Tabard with LED lights on, and hat band for me. I ALWAYS wear both when leaving the yard.

Tend not to put much on Molly, but if its really dusky an exercise sheet and reflective leg wraps.

Went out in the dark a couple of times, round a well lit quiet estate, but put a white head torch on my hat, and a red light on the back of my hat. Flashing lights galore!! But I could certainly be seen.

Use both + leg bands on the skittish one. Have tons of the stuff - warm exercise sheets in fluorescent yellow for the winter, mesh for the summer, and a similar variety for me!

This is pretty standard reflective stuff during the winter. I always ride with everything on except the sheet when I'm on the road. Sheets used when it's dull or dark.

At the moment it's just the tabbard I wear - nothing for Mr C but then we've only really started hacking out since the clocks changed.

He'll get some brushing/over reach hiviz boots coming into the winter and possibly an exercise sheet!:)

I use a yellow reflective banana bag from C S Saddlery, it not only carries my car keys and money safely it has a flashing led light facing to the rear and a relfective strip and I have the yellow equine emergency sos on my saddle so if I do part company with my horse he will be carrying all the needed info on board to ensure prompt attention when he is caught!
cssaddlery.co.uk do all the matching range.

really pleased to read lots of you do wear things, and some more than others.
i look like something out of space in the winter!

but good point whoever posted about the helicopters, i am 250yards away from a heliport which does day trips, and on the otherside i have cliffs, so yes either way you would get spotted by emergency services.

If you horse disappears off into the distance, the sos will re unite your horse back with you alot quicker than without one and no one would take much money with them on a ride anyway surely!!
No personal info of where your car might be is on the info in the sos so no one would know where your car is to steal it!

I'm glad it's not just me who likes to be seen! Been laughed at a number of times when leaving the yard (come the winter there's very little of us both that's not covered in hi-vis!) but when drivers comment on how well they could see us it makes it all worth while.

I never ride out without my tabard, and the rest depends on the weather. Have also managed to convert my main hacking pal to do the same, just need to work on the rest of the yard!

Well My hat is now constantly fitted with a flourescent band (with lights but the batterys ran out!) I have another band for dexters nose, 2 boots a tabbard and a quater sheet. Although cant really use quater sheet on long hacks or gallops as even tho its very light weight he gets too hot. I also got 3 snap on bands from work to use put not sure where to put them!!

yes the sheets do make the horse hot, so i bought a quarter sheet.
it's light and just fits to back of the saddle.

I always wear my hat band, and either a tabbard, or I have a really warm waterproof hi-viz jacket for winter wear - best buy of last year, a bargain at £15!

My horse has a hi-viz breastplate, and I have one set of v bandz leg wraps for his back legs, although I would like to get a set for his fronts too, and maybe a spare, as I keep forgetting to take them home to wash - oops! :o All nicely co-ordinated in yellow of course - neither of us do pink!! :p

I did have gloves and glove covers at one point, but they disintegrated pretty quickly unfortunately.
