There was a lady out at my yard recently and she was giving some of the horses a kind of massage. She started with these strange 'L' shaped sticks which spun by themselves  i was wondering if anyone new what they were or how they worked? Also she told me Hugo - thats my horse- had a sore back so he's getting a massage tomorrow which will hopefully make him feel better :D.

Hmm, I do equine sports massage, and don't use any gadgets except my hands (and elbows, sometimes knees, but you get the idea)!!!! Awaiting a knowledgable person's answer with interest!

she didnt use them for the massage. Like when she was assessing the areas which needed work she held them and they spun if they were nears a sore area - at least i think thats what they did. Then she would massage with like her hands as you would expect.

They sound like divination rods. They're used to pinpoint things (whether it be underground water or sore spots on your horse). When they find the target they cross as in 'x' marks the spot so that the therapist knows where to work.

Some people will use a Y shaped branch when dowsing for water, oil etc.

They're also called 'divining rods' or 'dowsing rods'.

Next question is how do I know stuff like this :p
