Pale Moon

I haven't spent a great deal of time at the yard in the last six months because of my severed achilles tendon, but my lad is full livery and the service I get for this is excellent.
My yard owner has just phoned me, to say that a little lump that Banjo has had for a while on his back, that they have been keeping their eye on, has in the last two days got much larger (about the size of a penny piece), it is now more raised, gone very hard and all the hair has fallen out over and around it. I have called the Vet, who cannot get down until Thursday.
I was just wondering if, in the meantime anyone had any ideas as to what this might be? My yard owner said that when she had noticed it initially a week or so ago, she had thought that it was a fly-bite. She said that it doesn't appear to hurt him at all, she has given it a couple of decent prods this morning and he hasn't shown any signs of discomfort. It is also on an area under his saddle.
If anyone has any ideas, would be grateful?
