As the title says:
Whats in your horsey first aid kit?
I'm steadily buying equipment in preparation for buying my first horse, and a first aid kit is something I still need. All I have so far is purple spray. What else do I need to buy?

Gosh I was very lucky as my brother in law works for Robinsons and he got me their super duper massive first aid box,one for equines and one for humans,It has everything imaginable in it from plasters to sterile gel,I also have in a couple of disposable nappies as they are a fantastic back up for padding, heavy bleeding etc, also sanitary pads,(for horses use!)We were at a show once and our pony got his leadrope round his fetlock,he'd pulled it that tight it cut into his skin, out came the pad, bandaged on and it kept it clean and sterile till we got home!I have put in the usual everyday things like arnica, bite cream etc.

Mine is fairly large :o It started off with a few basics, and over the years, it has become enormous.
2 x purple spray (I am convinced I will run out right when I need it!)
Cornucrescine
Hibiscrub
Vetalintex (wonderful stuff)
Aloe Vera gel
Salt
Ice Blue (I think that's right... it's got Witch Hazel and Arnica in it and is cooling when applied to swelling or filled legs)
Animalintex
Vaseline
Sudocreme
Fly spray
Saline solution (for rinsing eyes or wounds)
Bute
Cotton wool
Gamgee
Sponges in separate plastic bags which are washed in disinfectant after use
A clean towel, kept in a bag and washed after use
Several pairs of new, packaged latex gloves
3 x Vetwrap
4 x Stable bandages
Round ended scissors
Thermometer
Tweezers
Sharps box (Sal usually ends up on penicillin injections at least once a year  )
Various sized wound dressings
Gel pack (the sort you soak in water to make it cold)
Tub for making up poultices or hot salt water
Tape
I think I started off with some wound powder, purple spray, scissors, animalintex and vetwrap! You will find that over time you find out which items you use a lot and which items you never really touch. Eventually the untouched items will drop out of your kit. I get through a LOT of vetalintex thanks to the clumsiness of my TB, but rarely used the wound powder, for example, so that ended up being donated to a friend who needed it.

That is great Sez! Very helpful, thank you. I will look at getting some of the basics.
Ready made kits are great but people have preferences, some stuff you use a lot, some stuff you never do and I think I'd rather build my own.

 feeling like a neglectful Mum. Ive got hibiscrub (used a lot) saline (used a lot for cleaning eyes) some bandages, sterile non stick dressings, cotton wool, latex gloves, scissors (use a lot but mainly for other stuff!) and a thermometer. Thankfully except for lots of small nicks and cuts havent needed it.
Having looked at that list it may be an idea to go shopping....
