We are entering our first season of showing this year. My ickle girl (the human one) has turned the magic 3 and we are all set to go!
My other little girl( he equine one) is a dab hand at it cos she's 11, been there, done it got the t.shirt, although she is far from the push button pony:D
Jus looking for a few tips really. As i'm only 23 myself i dont want to go down the whole ' two-piece and hat' get up, i'll just look like i'm playing 'dress up' in mummys clothes!!!!!!! So I was thinking:
Matching shirt and tie to jockeys
Waistcoat to complement lottie's jacket
Dark beige Pants which I have worn for in-hand showing
My Dubarry boots, now the quesion is, trousers in or out of boots:confused: hmmmm?!
Of course, being a young mum, i'll have all my piercings and tatoos and multi coloured hair all on display. ha ha as if!
And if we get to county level, thats the ultimate goal, uh oh, PUSHY MUM ALERT!!!! I might give the twin set combo a go, who knows!
Remember, if its not a Welsh pony, its just a pony!
Keep you posted, i'd love to hear from any other Pushy mums in West Yorkshire, we can GRRRRRRR:mad:at each other in the show ring. ha ha.

Do you think a soft hat or a velvet riding hat if I have to wear one? Round here one of our competitors at a local show was killed by her horse as she was trotting her horse up for judge, so I would prob have gone for the riding hat, but its not got the traditional look of leadrein has it?
health and safety over tradition? mind, I dont wear a hat when I take lottie and Tosca out from home so suppose i'mputting myself at risk everyday:confused:
I DO ALWAYS WEAR A HAT WHEN RIDING THOUGH!
I know this is SOOOOOOOO cheeky:eek: but does anyone here do shibden dale R.C and go to others too and have space in a trailer for a tiny dot? Just asking!

Sorry dont do Shibden Dale very often.
I'm afraid that if you want to look the part you have to have the whole outfit, including silly hat.
We never did much lead rein when my daughter was little, I wasn't a young mum but I still felt silly :D
For gods sake skirt, jacket, hat and shoes in a muddy show field
You will end up giving in and wearing it all :D
Post the pics when you do

Yay, we got a second and 2 qualifying cards, in lead rein pony class on sunday, even tho pony had a badly sunburnt nose:(
She went like an angel, and really showed herself off. Everytime we went past crowd, all I could hear was 'awwww, how cute' and when it came to the rising trot, everyone went doe eyed. I must admit lottie did ride very well. Going in for lead rein equitation next time, see what judges have to say bout it.
Some pictures to follow, you'll have to excuse my silly expressions, it was very bright and I was squinting to see the judge in his bright white shirt! should have worn my hat.
Let me know how your lead rein classes are going.

'fraid I'm not a lead rein pushy mum but a pushy auntie, my niece has her first show this weekend. At 8 She is top end lead-rein age but as it's her first show I thought she might as well go in for it if she still qualifies and it gives her the confidence to go in knowing that there is someone else there.
I'm so excited although my friend is doing the leading,as she has the full outfit, I just want them to have fun.
Glad your little girl did so well and bet she did look cute, can't wait to see the pictures.

My eldest in 6 andd off the lead rein in theory but on at shows! and youngest has done a couple of shows, she is 3. Pony has also been there and done that but I will not do the lead rein hat and skrt business either! It is just not me. I tend to just lead them round in my show gear - cream jods, long boots, tie and jacket and manage to get away with it. I have actually usually just jumped off Rosie anyway doing ridden cob. As for a hat, if I wear one, it is my riding hat (navy velvet show hat) but it depends on my hair, the weather etc! If everyone else is wearing one, I put mine on but I would rather wear a riding hat than some of the ridiculous lead rein mummy statements you see on parade!!

i *could* be a pushy mum lol. my eldest is out of lead rein classes now and not particularly competitive (she's 9) so rides for fun. she only started riding at 7.5 though...she has her sights on pony club next year i think;)
my 6 yr old doesn't ride.
my nearly 3 yr old (3 next week) loves to ride, loves the pony and loves dressing up so i'd like to think we will do some lead rein shows end of this year if poss but will depend on pony's soundness and class rules as a lot of LR classes round here say rider has to be 4yrs to 8yrs. also some classes say ponies under 12hh some say 12.2hh or under (ours is 12.3hh but has been ok in the 12.2hh or under classes at local shows)
i'm a young mum too btw:D (well not 'that' young now but still younger then most.)
nearly forgot ETA well done for doing so well at the show though :)

Been there said, 'I am not dressing up'...and...got all the gear to blend in!
Never went as far a one woman on the circuit at that time who's underwear matched her childs colour scheme, very bitchy comments amongst other mums about which judges knew that info :o

Here is a picture of myself and daughter last year on friends Exmoor so we are in the style of Mountain and Moorland. Friend is a showing judge so helped us with right gear. I bought daughters Pretty Ponies jacket second hand on e-bay for about £70! I hate the OTT leid rein outfits although do not think this flatters me much! If you really want to get full effect matching jackets look great (I had to make do), we also could have done with matching navy hats (mine is the old fashioned type hat with elastic strap cut off), I know that with the style I wore you are meant to wear light trousers with dark pony and vice versa so you can clearly see action of the pony, show cane for leader, both with brown leather type gloves and matching ties. Daughter also wears yellow jods, brown jod boots and brown jodhpur clips (think it is important to have the jod clips). We both also had matching scrunchies and had hair in bun and hair net with scrunchie around, friend advised me that numnah's are ok as long as a colour to match the saddle and fit shape of saddle, not lots showing all around saddle. I have bought an extra small one to fit my daughter's current 14" saddle.
We won by the way - the only time!! This was a specialist Exmoor lead rein pony, we have done it mountain and moorland and unplaited against show pony types and wonder if plaited show pony look is sometimes preferred.
My friend was told by a judge in LR class once that it would have been nice if she could have worn a hat (I have personally done it with just hair tied back, think looks more professional with hat though), I was also told it would have looked better if I had cut round edges of the number on daughter's back, but friend who competes county level said that county level people don't like doing it now as everyone does it - not sure just what she said.

Just finished washing mini shetland now!!! All plaited (for undoing tomorrow morning), and clean. Just got tack and boots to do now! We arent going to be correctly turned out (cub synthetic saddle, black bridle, black boots etc..) but hey, it's only local and for fun! Will take some pics.

That Exmoor is beautiful, juliedorman, no wonder you won, looked like a good team effort.
All ponies in our class were chesnut section a's, looked like we should have been doin some strange cloned drill riding display! Tosca had the cleanest, whitest legs tho, mucho's scrubbing and bandaging and whitner!
Next show is a week sunday, just local again, but if we do ok this one, might go to local agricultural at beginin of Aug, then i'll get a skirt and hat!
Just a conformation question, look at pics and look at pony's point of shoulder. Do you think its too prominent and angular? Is it cos her necks set too high and could I do anything to work/ hide it? or am i just paranoid.

Yes the Exmoor looks lovely, I used to ride him out as not a childs ride! He is a great fun ride. You looked great in your showing class and a well deserved 2nd so you must be getting it right with the clothes. What you were wearing is a much more upto date showing outfit and if it is not your style, I wouldn't bother with the fussy skirts. You could get a trendy hat, have seen one other person in a similar style and she wore one of those tweed flat caps, or you could try a trilby? or see if you can get a matching velvet old fashioned riding hat with the strap cut off. Difficult one with your legs contrasting the pony's as the ponies legs are two tone!

yeah, but darker pants made white look whiter, especially as shes quite a quickflashy littlemoverin the trot.
I bought a brown skirt the other day, but not tried it on yet, dont know if I dare go out in public in it!

Well done for you & your little girl at the shows!Im 20 and have a 23month little boy-ive always had ponies growing up but gave up when i hit about 15/16, now ive recently purchased a black yearling welsh a filly for my son to hopefully compete leadrein classes on (lol i can see im gonna so be a pushy mum too!!;))-ive been daydreaming of when they are finally both old enough to compete, whilst browsing the sites at the leadrein outfits i noticed most of them start at size 10!Does anyone know where i can get a big6/small 8??Most of rider wear starts 10i thk in our local tack shops, some do 8`s if im lucky!

Can I just get something straight? Do you or do you not have to wear the lead rein mummy two piece and hat? I thought you did. I'd like my little girl to take her pony to a show but I took one look at those outfits and thought 'Er, no thanks'. Have seen my friend's pictures of her lead rein days with her son and she looks like Mrs Bucket. If it's just a case of wearing something 'suitable' then lead rein showing might become an option!
