I know some of you will be aware of my recent little addition. See pic if you have not seen him yet.

IF........ I can get him better and looking like a happy wee man, I would quite like to show him in hand. To give him a job to do rather than leaving him in the field for 2 1/2 years.
So I have some questions:
1/ He is unregistered (breeding unknown) should I register him with an society?
2/ He is a colt (yearling) so should he be shown with a in hand bridle? With or without a bit?
3/ Is he classed as a native?

Sorry for all the questions!!! :p

You could register him if you wanted to, the spotted horse society will have a supplementary section for ponies with no parentage or unknown breeding.

Youngstock can wear a leather slip or bitless inhand bridle.

Not sure if he could be classed as a native. He does look like one but does he have feathers? Can't see from the photos.

British spotted pony is a native, isn't it?

This is what I am confused about. BSP are native to Britain, but are not listed under the usual headings like exmoor and dartmoor etc... Should he come under the coloured category? I am so confused, never had a spotted before, as you have probably guessed!!
There must be some spotted showing peeps out there???

Start e-mailind different societies and see which ones most suit your way of thinking, there are some societies out there I wouldn't give my money to to register my horse! ;)

Send them pictures and see who would welcome him in with open arms.

Steer well clear of the Shetland Pony Society as "spotted" is a swear word in their circles! :D ;)

Is he a British Spotted then???

Really dont know? His so called passport said he was a dartmoor hill pony!
Which, I dont think can be right............ It would be good if he was a BS. If that is the case is he classed as a native?

Unfortunately for showing purposes he won't be classed as a native, whatever breed or type he is, because none of the native breeds accepted for show classes accept spotted ponies.

If he can be ID'd as a British Spot it will give him some more value.

British spotteds seem to be a bit of a enigma, out on their own. I used to ride on, back in the dim and distant and Karen Bassett used to drive a team of them.

www.nativeponymart.co.uk list spotties on their and the details for the BSP society are on there. I have met the lady who runs it (was going to be riding her spottie stally at one point) and she's lovely and very helpful so I'd get in touch with her for advice.
