View Full Version : Saddle position - help please

Ok - since the lovely poohsmate has helped sort Mr C's back and saddle I am extremely paranoid about making sure the saddle is in the correct position - I sometimes spend 10 minutes just placing and replacing it on his back:o
Anyway, I don't know if I'm perhaps putting it too far forward?
It is definately sitting behind his scapula but I've tried placing it a few fingers behind his scapula and when I do this my leg position is pretty awful especially when coming back to trot from canter - my legs bang about all over the place but when the saddle is slightly further forward, it's fine.
I know it may be something to do with C's back being more free to move when the saddle is positioned correctly therefore I'm moving more.
Any ideas?
Here's how it was sitting last night (I moved it further back tonight!)

Someone posted a great link for a saddle fitting video.
In that they marked where the scapular was when the horse was stood and then held his leg up as if he was in full extension and marked where the scapular had travelled back to. :)

Do you use a numnah under your saddle BB?
I've not been using one as the ones that I have are a bit cheap and the saddle seems to slide about a lot when I use them whereas when I ride with just the saddle its fine - not sure if it's something to do with the serge panels or just the cheap material in the numnuh! I'm looking into one of the hi wither ones that apparently sit well with the saddle.
Having looked at some piccies of other peoples horses I think that perhaps my sadde is slighly too far forward so will try moving it slightly back again!:)

Ahh – no worries just has heard of serge changing if in contact with sweat etc? How true not sure just had this from a couple of saddlers I have spoken to. Also the synthetic under not best to be in contact with horses back

Do you have a more inclusive picture of his with his saddle on? The ones you've posted are a bit close up as you really need to see the whole of his shoulder and body to judge.
But (from what my computer screen can show in one go) it does look a bit far forwards.

It may be because you have been used to riding with the saddle too far forwards and your body is now having to re-align itself when riding.
The first few times I rode with the back-riser it was strange because I was soo used to having to throw my weight forward to rise as I was soo far back.

I think that's what's causing the problem Nikki!
I've become used to sitting in that more forward position and even thought it's just a slight adjustment backwards it feels really weird and I can feel him moving underneath me much more!
I'll just have to get used to it!:D
