I am trying to train a very lazy horse for general ridding, Little dressage and maybe a little jumping down the track. My problem is Th owner will not let me use a whip. I dont like to use the whip often anyway i just dont know how else to get this horse moving forward.
he is very overweight and i plan to only do walk and trot for a few weeks to get her fitter. She i still a little green and before i got to ride her she was ridden about 6 times in 3years. he is as quite as can bebut if you push her she bucks.
When i get on she walk very slowly with her head raised(not to high but a bit to high for what i want). Then she keeps stoping with no warning. If you ask her to trot it takes ages of taping with the legs and a very lose rein. And then she takes a few steps and then halts. I have gotten her into a canter a few times but the same thing a few strides and then he halts. I was thinking of lunging her to get her in condition to be ridden and then long reining her and getting her use to the aids again.
I have been told that she was a well trained horse years ago but has just lost it from never being worked.

Please tell me if you have any ideas.

What you've got planned out for the mare seems to be great, but I'm not trainer, never trained a horse in my life, not at my age. I think you should first get her more fit, and more used to the work. Could be she's reluctant because she's not happy doing it, or it tires her out quickly because she is unfit.

try hacking her out with a horse in front, when she learns been riden is fun,she will listen to you more, and be more willing to go forward.

slow hacks with other horses are the best way to build up fitness without any strain. lunging is quite stressful for a horses legs.

ie 1 hour a day to 2 hours a day in walk for 2 weeks, then addsome trot for the next few weeks etc.

when the horse gets fitter he should get more responsive and less lazy.
